Thursday night I sat in my bedroom listening to a two year old Two Door Cinema Club cd after spending the entire day with my mom. It wasn't as horrific as it sounds, actually. Usually hanging out with her made me realize what a bad person she truly was, but this time it was different. She didn't criticize every person we came across and didn't complain the entire time. We used to get mani/Pedi's every month together, and this month she was nothing but pleasant the entire time. It was really weird to be completely honest. It was like she got a wakeup call; like someone hit her over the head and said, "Hey, stop being a bitch all the time!"
She asked me about my life lately, and when I told her stuff (Ansel, mostly) she didn't go on a tirade about how I'm ruining my life. It was fun, for once. I just wondered how long it would last, if it would last at all. Maybe she and Dad had worked out their issues, finally.
"What's he like?" she asked me as our feet were being massaged.
"Effortlessly adorable, sweet as a freakin' lollipop, funny, understanding, kind; perfect basically," I answered.
"What about that one boy you were interested in last year?"
I waved her off, told her he was nothing to me, which wasn't a lie.
Dung called me around 7:30.
"Come over for dinner."
"Can you pick me up?"
"UGH."
I laughed. "I'll walk."
"Bitch, that's dumb."
"It's barely dark yet, I'll be fine."
I hung up, put my was-pin-straight-a-few-hours-ago hair into a pony tail, and put my outfit from earlier today back on; jean shorts, a floral tank top, a gray cardigan-sweater and sandals.
It was a bit chilly outside as it was 8 now. I wrapped my sweater tighter around me, crossing my arms over my chest as I walked, taking my time. There weren't any cars on the neighborhood road so I walked right in the middle of it, taking in my surroundings. Tall trees in each yard swayed in the breeze gusting, flowers in bloom looked extremely bright in the nightfall. I reached Dung's enormous house at the end of the block in about 20 minutes. I let myself in the front door and was greeted by his ma. She wrapped her chubby arms around my neck and squeezed.
"Good to see you, Mrs. Ngyuen."
"You too, Hadley."
Her and her husband's accents were much thicker than Dung's. They grew up in Vietnam, but Dung grew up here.
"He's upstairs, dinner will be ready in 10 minutes." I smiled and headed up the stairs.
When I opened the door Dung was positioned the same way he was when I came over a couple days ago.
"Hey, babe," he said with a sigh.
"What's wrong with you?" I asked him.
"Penn."
I smiled. "What he hasn't called you yet or something?"
"Ha-ha. Yes, that's exactly it. He. Hasn't. Called. You're used to guys not reciprocating the feeling of lust, any advice?"
"Ha-ha. I actually haven't been in this position before, but I will say that if he isn't interested then he isn't interested. Just leave it at that, and get over it."
"He kissed me, I'm an awesome kisser," he explained.
"How would you know?"
"Practiced on my hand for years." My head tipped back as I laughed.
"So, I give him space or some shit?"
"Yes."
He sighed. "Alright."
We ate dinner, spring rolls which actually didn't taste of spring but of a fat, old man's bowel movement in my opinion, and talked on his front porch until I had to go home.
"Love you, babe. See you soon?" he said as I walked down his driveway.
"Of course, love you too."
His poor, oblivious parents probably thought we were dating.
