The next morning I was doing a load of laundry when I got a text from Ansel.
I'm taking you out tonight, it read.
I'm sorry, that is NOT how you properly ask out a girl. Try again, I sent back.
Sorry, Hadley, for you are the fairest, raddest babe in the land, would you attend a gathering with me tonight?
A gathering?
A party.8 o'clock. Be ready.
I rolled my eyes and gathered a wad of clean clothes from the dryer. I headed into my parents room to fold them and put them away. As I was walking past their bed a piece of paper lying on the floor caught my eye. Someone must have dropped it when they were undressing or something. I looked around to make sure I was completely alone, set the clothes on their bed, and picked up the paper.
Had fun last night, see you tomorrow -Melissa
A red lipstick stain was planted on the bottom of the note.
Who the fuck is Melissa? I thought.
The first thing to come to my mind was Dad and those nights when he was 'working late'. He was definitely working alright; working on getting laid by some office whore. I knew my dad wasn't exactly a saint, but I never thought he was the type of man who cheated. Him and Mom were having problems lately but how could they possibly be that bad? Bad enough that he'd seek comfort from another woman?
How fucking dare he. Mom wasn't my favorite person, but she didn't deserve to be cheated on and lied to. Dad wasn't supposed to be 'working late' tonight so we were scheduled to have a very rare, very special family dinner. I couldn't wait to expose his lying ass in front of Ashton and Mom. In that moment, I'd never hated anyone more than I hated my dad.
I finished putting away their laundry and called Ansel from my bedroom.
"Hey, how are ya?" he asked me.
Tears soon began rolling down my cheeks. God dammit. I didn't cry often, especially not around boys I like.
"Hadley? Are you okay? It sounds like you're crying-"
I let out a frustrated scream and kicked my bedroom door.
"Okay, I'm coming over."
"No, its fine-"
But he had already hung up. A few minutes later Ansel entered my room. I sat on the floor leaning against my bed; I hadn't moved a muscle since I called him. He sat down next to me.
"Are you gonna tell me what's going on? I told your mom I needed to borrow a book, is this something she should handle? Like some PMS shit or something?"
I couldn't help but laugh. "No, it's not PMS shit. It's that real life shit, the stuff I like to try to ignore while I still can."
He didn't say anything, just looked at me with kind eyes.
"You've had girlfriends before, right?" I asked him.
"Wow, I'm truly hurt you would ask that. I thought that by my dashingly good looks and charm it would've been obvious."
I laughed again. "Well I just wasn't sure. So yes?"
"Yes. Why?"
"Did you ever cheat on one them? Or consider it?"
"Never."
Then I realized, I'm no better than my father. Jonathan and I may not have been married, but it was still wrong.
"Oh my god. I'm awful, I'm sick." I put my head in my hands.
"What? No- What happened?" I grabbed my hands.
"I found a note from this woman-"
Ansel nodded. "Your dad's cheating? And you think what we're doing is the same thing?"
"It's the exact same thing!"
"You don't love Jonathan, you never did, it's not the same. You didn't vow to love each other til the day you die; it's not the same, Hadley."
"It's still not okay."
He released my hands. "I know," he said.
I reached for my phone and dialed Jonathan's number. "Who are you-"
I shushed him. "Hey, we need to talk," I told Jonathan.
The corners of Ansel's mouth tipped up slowly as he realized what I was doing. He wrapped his arms around my waist and began kissing and nipping as my neck, fiercely.
I laughed and tried to push him off as Jonathan said, "Oh, okay..."
I mouthed Quit to Ansel. His smile grew and he let go of me.
"Yeah, we need to break up," I told him.
Ansel began laughing uncontrollably and fell back on the floor, clutching his stomach. I smacked his arm.
"Why? I thought you-"Jonathan began.
"Sorry, I'm just- bored in all honesty. I hope you understand."
"Um, yeah okay. See you around, Hadley."
I hung up and tossed my phone to the floor. It didn't take long before Ansel tackled me to the floor. We were both laughing so hard out stomachs hurt. He was squeezing my body against his and mumbling, "I love you, I love you, I love you," over and over again. I wasn't sure if he meant THE I love you, or if he was just happy. I didn't think about it much, I was too happy myself, giggling uncontrollably. I never giggled.
He pressed his lips against mine and slipped his hand up the back of my shirt. It tickled and I laughed into his mouth.
"I can't believe you did that," he said his voice low and rough.
"You can't?"
"Well, I can. I mean, who can resist all of this?" he gestured to his body and I laughed again.
"True."
"Anyway, I just- I'm happy you did it."
"Me too." He kissed me again.
"So-"he began.
"Shut up," I muttered, and forced our mouths together again.
