I skipped breakfast. My stomach hurt. I was going to ask Cyrus Goodman out. Oh my god.
I spent too long on my hair and I was almost late. I forgot my phone on the counter and we got to school with five minutes left before the bell. I ran out of my mom's car and into the school. I raced down the hallways, looking around frantically to find Cyrus. And then I saw him. Standing with a kid I didn't know. The kid had darker skin and curly hair and was leaned up against a locker while Cyrus stared at him with a huge smile on his face.
I walked over to him, calling out, "Hey, Cy-guy!"
He looked over and his smile grew wider. "Hey, Jonah!"
The kid came off of the wall and looked over at Cyrus. Cyrus looked back and forth from him and I and said, "Jonah, this is Walker."
Walker looked over at me and I smiled. "Sup. You new here?"
He nodded, saying, "Yeah, I moved here like a few weeks ago."
Cyrus smiled at Walker. "He was at my synagogue," He said, looking back to me.
I had no idea what that was, but I smiled and nodded. I felt so insanely awkward just standing there. Cyrus just absorbed and admired Walker's existence. I needed to get Cyrus away and ask him. How am I supposed to ask him out with this kid here?
"Did you need something?" Walker asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I really wanted to glare at this guy. But I couldn't. I'm supposed to be nice.
"I just wanted to ask Cyrus something," I said, smiling at Cyrus.
"What?" Cyrus asked in his cute little curious voice.
"Um, if you wanted to go mini golfing with me sometime," I told him.
His face lit up. "When?"
"I don't know. Saturday?" I asked, shrugging.
I could feel Walker's glare on the side of my face. Cyrus' face dropped as he looked over to Walker. "Oh, Walker and I were going to go to the movies on Saturday."
"Oh, you could come, too!" I blurted out to Walker.
Ugh. Frig you, Jonah. What the heck.
Walker looked over to Cyrus and shrugged. "Sure," he said. Then he turned to me and said, "You should bring your girlfriend."
"Andi and I broke up," I said, rubbing my neck.
Peak state of awkwardness. Cyrus' eyes grew wide open. "What? Really?" He asked.
I nodded.
Walker sighed. "That's a shame. It would've been a double date."
Double date?! Huh? Cyrus looked up longingly at Walker. I quickly excused myself and started speed walking down the hallway. My heart was suspended in my chest and I couldn't get the image of Cyrus admiring his stupid face out of my head. Buffy quickly spotted me and ran over.
She opened her mouth to say something, but I cut her off by saying, "Him and Walker?"
"I texted you this morning," she whispered with a sympathetic smile on her face.
"I left my phone at home!" I yelled with my tone rising. "I was in such a rush to get here that I forgot it!"
She looked down at her feet, her smile disappearing. "And now I'm third wheeling on a mini golf date," I muttered, walking away.
I couldn't believe it. Him and his stupid Jewish Romeo. Whenever I saw them together in the halls, I quickly averted my eyes. Andi and Buffy looked disgusted walking behind them. I sensed that they were getting the same vibe from that kid that I was.
