CHAPTER FOUR

Hearing the phone rang, she suddenly woke up and realized she had fallen asleep on the couch. She took the phone and taken aback to find out her manager had been trying to call , her screen flashed 21 missed calls.

She yawned and her gaze traveled to the wall clock, God, it was still six in the morning, she was free, she thought.

She never thought she hadn’t managed to make it to the  bed before the wine defeated her and swallowed her conscious mind. She looked for that glass she had used the other night and  spotted it on the floor, well not even shattered.

She just drank last night, to forget her problem temporarily, that’s the use of alcohol, a temporary solution to a problem but wouldn’t solve a problem and that’s the trouble, she didn’t know how to.

She waited how many seconds for Mr.Brown to call  again, but nothing came, thus she decided to lie down again.

Not yet touching the covers with her back when the ringing came again and pressed her lips together. before  saying “Hello.” .

“Good God, where in hell are you?” Mr. Brown shrieked.

Rolling her eyeballs and  playing her hair using her right index finger.

“          Facing the devil himself.” Devonne answered sarcastically.

Mr.Brown ignored the sarcasm and said, “So, you really believe it now?”

           No answer. Useless.

“We need to clear your name and you have to get back to work, you have a concert tonight.”

“Where?” She asked while she grimaced, her head suddenly ached.

“You had a drink again.” It was said disdainfully.

What? She thought, he made it sound like she was indeed a drunkard.

Devonne wasn’t sure if she would keep Mr.Brown as her manager for the rest of her career. If she still had a career remaining.

“At Detroit.” He answered her question anyway.

She let out a sigh and said, “Yeah, I almost forgot.”

Fine. She would travel and perform once again. Before, she enjoyed it but now,  couldn’t feel it anymore.

She felt so empty, having a feeling that she lacked of something.

“Be ready in an hour.” Mr. Brown reminded her but it sounded like a mandate.

“You still have to attend a press conference.” He answered for her silent curiosity.

“Yeah really, to clear my name.” She answered coolly.

She thought what was she going to clear, they were not even true, for her, to talk would only worsen the situation, that you were indeed guilty. But for Pete’s sake, she would, she thought grudgingly.

The press conference didn’t go out well. There were haters who had managed to get pass the security. One woman yelled at her “slut” but she just hid her contempt and held herself still and even managed to smile.

She heard questions that were not supposed to be asked, too personal others were too insulting thus security guards carried them off outside.

She heard one asked “What’s your relationship to Mr. Morris, is he your boyfriend?” Smiling that moment while facing the camera when she heard it, she knew that Mr.Morris who was being mentioned by that vulgar woman, and he should not be involved in her mess. She ignored it.

Other man asked, a pressman perhaps, “how’s your relationship with your friend?’ It was Camille, he meant.

She answered him, “I have my life and she has her own life too to be pondered.”

Besides, I don’t like hearing that she’s my friend, cause I don’t feel like it. She wanted to add it but decided not to.

But De Vonne thought bitterly,  the damage had been done, it would leave a wound that would keep on bleeding until it was fed up, only the scar would remain.

She left the room in silence not caring what they had been talking, it was useless she thought, whether you’ve done good or bad, people would always talk about you, everyone got a hater as nobody’s perfect.

Heading to her car when her phone rang, she looked at the screen, she didn’t know the number but answered it anyway.

“Hello.” She answered while arching her fine eyebrows.

“Hi Yvonne.” Nobody called her in the first name except for Camille and her family, yes, it was her, and she almost forgot Camille's voice on the phone.

“What do you want?” She snapped.

“Please, I just wanted to greet you.” Camille pleaded,  sounded concern or any feeling she couldn’t fathom.

“What, to congratulate me?” She said grimly.

“No, Yvonne, please…” Camille said, it seemed she didn’t know what to say.

“Don’t call me that anymore.” She gravely said.

She sounded like  the antagonist in a movie, which in fact she was the one who was being oppressed by people, particularly by her friends.

She heard Camille cried. What? She indeed sounded like she was the one destroying people’s lives.

“Stop that, will you?” She snapped once again. “Look, you’re not the one who’s in my situation, don’t act like you are so down, so best save your tears for your next projects.” She finished while  turned off the phone and threw it inside her duffel bag.

She was inside the elevator of a hotel in Detroit when someone squeezed her rear end.

Heck.

She turned around just in time to see a man who just came in a while ago. He smiled flashing his white teeth. He was already balding and was short in height but still had a nerve to be rude.

She swung her hand free and hit the brute with her palm straight to his face. She was grateful that the elevator opened and left the man behind, but  heard him chuckled.

She was so pissed off.  While heading to her suite hurriedly , someone called Yvonne. She span around, and was surprised.

“What are you doing here?” She asked him while  looking around. She didn’t want to be seen with Chuck Morris or she didn’t want Chuck to be seen with her.

“Just wanna visit you.” He answered  carelessly.

“But you’re not supposed to be here.”  She said trying to be calm.

“I know what you are going through these days.” Chuck sounded concern, and De Vonne's sensed it was genuine.

But she shook her head. No. Nobody knew.

Chuck took her hand in his  while pulling her gently towards him, she couldn’t fight it anymore thus she let her self cried on his shoulders while he rubbed her back soothingly. He hushed her up, luckily there was no one in sight.

“I should be the one protecting you but it looks like you’re the one protecting me. Why don’t you just …..” She interrupted him.

“No. How’s Melissa?” She asked him when she pulled away, Melissa was his wife.

“She’s fine, in fact, she’s happily seven month pregnant.” He informed her while his blue eyes shone.

She smiled while sniffing and nose reddened. He noticed it and he pinched it while he said, “You can do it, just trust in yourself, but if you need something you know I’m always here for you.” He said earnestly.

She nodded her head.

She whisked him away afterwards for fear that they might be seen together.
