Lunch came next and I met up with Steve and Kassandra so we could go and sit at the ‘garden’. I don’t even know how it came to be called the garden. Alice just named it the garden. We sat on a bench and started laughing at random comments that Steve and Tessa made. They were some crazy people. I stared off into the distance and sucked on my Capri Sun. It was a nice sunny day and lots of people were out on the field.
I didn’t see him until he was right in front of me. Someone cleared their throat behind me and they all went silent. Janet shouted my name and I looked up. Nathan was standing in front of me. My cheeks turned slightly red and I got up out of my seat on the bench. He looked at the ground awkwardly.
“Can we, can we go somewhere private?” he asked shyly.
My cheeks reddened even more and I hear Steve whistle behind me. Before I nodded and shot a glare at Steve and she grinned back at me. That girl! She’s going to be the death of me! And by death she’s going to embarrass me so much it will not go away. I nodded at Nathan then and he led me somewhere. He kept checking over his shoulder to see if I was still there before carrying on. We found a secluded place behind some trees near the top of the field before he turned around and gave me a serious look.
I chuckled.
“What?” he asked,
“Your serious look always made me laugh.” I replied putting a hand over my mouth to stop laughing harder.
“Look, Gwen, this isn’t funny I have something serious to ask you.”
“Then shoot oh serious one.” I joked.
He gave me a disapproving look and I closed my mouth. Or should I say I shut up.
“Do you promise not to interrupt me?” he asked.
I raised my eyebrows. Was he serious?
“Nathan you know-“he put a hand up to stop me and I sighed, “Yes! I promise not to interrupt you!”
“Do you remember in year 8 when you, you know, asked me the question?”
“It’s not a day I’m likely to forget.” He looked annoyed now.
I sighed and put my hands up as if to say fine.
“I, well, I. That, that was kinda, was kinda the um.”
“Oh for hell's sake spit it out!”
He raised his eyebrows.
“Fangirls say ‘hell’ instead of ‘god’” I answered.
“Well, um, moving on. That day was maybe the um. The um biggest. Um.” He carried on stuttering.
I turned around and started to walk away. If he wasn’t going to say what he wanted to say then I wasn’t going to stick around to watch him stammer.
“It was the biggest mistake I ever made!”
I stopped dead. My heart skipped a beat as I tried to process this.
“In my entire freaking life I have never made a bigger mistake.”
I slowly turned around to face him. My face was completely blank and I had to blink a couple times before I could see Nathan clearly.
“You what?” I mumbled.
“I have never made a bigger mistake, Gwen I’m-“but I stopped him.
“Wait, wait, wait. You’ve waited this long to tell me what exactly?!” I nearly shouted at him.
“That I’m sorry for what I said.”
“You’re sorry for saying no? You’re sorry for telling me to, how did you put it, get a life?!”
“Gwen, I’m really sorry!”
“No Nathan, you don’t get to apologize not after all this time.” I stated.
He looked really sorry but I didn’t care. Jerk. If he wanted me to say ‘oh Nathan its OK I completely forgive you!’ then he would have to wait for like the world to end. Never could I ever forgive him.
I stood there for a few more minutes with my hands curled into fists at my side and Nathans stupid face gawking at me. Then I walked away.
“Wait!” he shouted behind me but I refused to turn around.
“Gwen! Please just let me say one more thing!”
This caught my curiosity. I wondered what it was he wanted to say. I uncurled my hands and softened my face. Then I turned to him, but he wasn’t there. Surprise shook me and someone tapped my shoulder softly. I turned around expecting to see Steve or Janet but no. Nathan stood about a millimeter in front of me.
A cherry red blossomed on my cheeks at how close we were standing. About a second later his mouth was on mine and we were kissing. My eyes fluttered slightly but they stayed open in shock. His lips moved softly against mine and his hands slithered around my waist and stayed there.
The kiss carried on and I snaked my hands around his neck. My eyes slowly shut and I moved my body closer to his. By now we were both kissing properly and the shock was replaced by… something.
I snapped my eyes open and came back to reality. I jumped away from him and he stood there lips parted. My fingers traced my lips and the shock returned.
“What just happened?” I muttered. He blinked once then regained his composure.
“I, Gwen.” He stuttered.
I smiled and burst out laughing. He laughed too but not as much as me. That was something I was not expecting. He walked up to me as if to make another move but I slapped him.
“Once was fine.” I smirked.
Nathan looked a bit confused but then he got it when he saw I was still smiling. I put my hand on his face and he drew closer. We closed our eyes and he brushed my lips. My smile grew and he kissed me for longer this time.
We stood like this for what seemed like forever. Just kissing, but it never is just kissing. We pulled apart but stayed in each other’s arms.
“But twice is always better.” He finished.
A thought popped into my head then. It was something Steve was telling me about how to end something either quickly of if it’s awkward. I realized what we were doing then and decided to end it. And quickly.
“Nathan.” I whispered.
“Yeah.” He answered.
“Never doubt the worm.”
