A girl with light brown hair was scanning the teen books in Waterstones one dull grey day. She reached her hand out and touched a book. The title read Ripped Apart. She took it from the shelf and held it in her hands. It was quite thick and it had a lovely front cover. The girl turned it over and read the blurb.

Two people, a girl from England and a boy from America. One day their lives were normal then the Gods called out and they were ripped from their childhood homes. Two people, two personalities, two identities. Can they work together to save the Gods and restore peace? Shai and Sebastian will have to overcome the vilest of emotions. Hate.

She nodded and turned the book back over.

“Hey honey have you chosen a book?” her mother asked.

“Yes. I want to get this one.” She replied holding up the book.

“Ripped Apart? Okay then here’s the money I just have to find something.” Her mother replied handing her a ten pound note.

She trotted up to the front desk and placed Ripped Apart on the counter. A TV was playing the news and she listened whilst the man did his job.

“A young girl who was recently identified as the author of Ripped Apart jumped off the John Lewis’s rooftop in Exeter a week ago. Just before her book was announced New York Bestseller and England’s book of the Month. Gwen Oswin was only fourteen and her book reached one thousand sold in the UK and America just yesterday. Fans from both countries are coming to Exeter to pay their respects to the young author. Many people on sites like Tumblr and Instagram are also paying their respects. It turns out this fourteen year old girl became a famous author. It is a shame she died before she could see the affects her book is making. Teenagers around the world are in mourning and her friends and family are distraught.”

The girl passed the money over to the man behind the counter and looked down at the book.

“It’s a real shame.” The man said.

“What?” the girl replied.

“That girl who died. The author of this book.” He said again tapping the book. “She committed suicide before she could see that her book was the most popular this month. I’ve had lots of kids come in here and buy that book. This is why I put a poster of her book up.”

He pointed to a poster behind the counter and the girl stared at it.

“Her friends and family are holding a very special funeral for her but they haven’t told anyone what it’s going to be.” He told the girl.

I watched from afar the man at the counter talk to the girl. The girl glanced out the window to the people gathered around John Lewis. I glanced at the TV and an image of her popped up.

“This girl will be remembered by her family, fans and most importantly her closest friends.” The reporter was saying.

Got that goddamned right. I walked out the book shop and over to the rest of her friends. Isabelle was crying into Katrina’s shoulder, Janet was standing with Tessa, Kassandra and Steve. Steve looked like she always did, strong, but she was on the verge of breaking down. Emilia and Jacklyn were with Ingrid and Francesca. They all looked completely distraught. Someone tapped me on the shoulder.

“It’s not fair is it?” they said as I turned around.

“Nathan.” I gasped.

“Well what did you expect?” he replied angrily. “I’m sorry, it’s just. Kaci I.”

He looked like he was trying really hard to not cry.

“I know.” I said truthfully.

“You must be going through the same thing.” He observed. “Like them.”

He pointed to my friends and I nodded.

“Kaci, its time.” Steve called me over.

Everyone was heading into John Lewis.

“Nathan. I know it’s a little awkward for me to ask but would you like to come?” I asked him.

“Are you sure? I mean I wouldn’t want to intrude.” He said.

I nodded. I looked over to my boyfriend and he waved at me. I waved back and then joined the others.

It was a windy Friday afternoon and we all gathered by the edge. We had all planned this together. All of her friends. Her family were having their own little funeral but we wanted to do something our own. The wind whipped through our hair and clothes but I didn’t feel it. Everyone had made something for this. Kassandra had made a little drawing, Tessa and Steve had put a little booklet of their best memories with her, Janet had made lovely picture frame with her favourite photo of them in and got her favourite book, Isabelle and Katrina had made a leaflet about her, Emilia had a piece of jewellery she gave her and had made some music up, Ingrid and Jacklyn had something signed by school which they had made and Francesca had a burn book that she and Alice had made. Although it was a burn book of nice things which was kind of weird but sweet. Me, well I had made a very special eulogy and a book written by John Green and J.K Rowling just for her. The book was my idea and I had helped come up with the characters and their back stories but the authors had actually written it. It was about a girl who could travel to the world of fiction and reality but she lived alone. Her heart was ice cold. And then a boy called Nathan came along.

Each of us took it in turn to read out messages we had created. After we read them we tore them up and they floated away in the breeze. Each of the gifts were placed at the edge. Nathan said something about her and then placed a box with everything else. My turn came at last and I walked up to the front.

Gwen would’ve liked this.
