He used to ask her all the time, if she was okay.
Are you okay, he asked, when they first met.
Are you okay, he asked, after their first performance.
Are you okay, he asked, when the silence filled the air, and everyone waited for a name. Pentatonix or Dartmouth Ares.
Like a little process of them.
-
He used to ask her all the time, even though none of them need an answer. He just asked. Gazing at her, he asked. "Kirstie, are you okay?"
The process, wasn't all about her. There was some night that he snuggled to her body, his bearded face scribbled on her neck, or her stomach, his eyes shut. He wasn't the strongest man, and life always got harder on him. That was when he needed someone to calm him down. Someone to lean on.
-
"Kirstie, are you okay?", he asked quietly, lowly, mumbled to her neck.
She ran her hand through his hair, put a kiss on it. "As long as I have you, I'm okay."
That was the confirmation he needed.
-
Her safeness was his first priority, she knew it. She always knew it. It was what he liked, a gentleman. His mom raised him well, she had to admit. He would ask her when he was tired or frustrated or hopeless. Or when he was afraid. They were his problems, but all of his attention was on her. If she was okay, he would be okay, too. He, always treated her like that, like she was his highness, or she was the most precious thing on Earth. "Kirstie, are you okay?"
-
As a gentleman he was, he asked her if she was okay the day they broke up. "No, Avi," she wanted to say. "I'm not okay without you.", she wanted to say. Tears blurred her sight and the silhouette of him faded away, like a dream, a fairytale that she couldn't keep. The day was coming, you were growing, and the dream, the fairytale had to go, eventually.
She never ever wanted to wake up.
Their fame was the daylight, and their love was the fairytale. He was the prince and she was the princess, and they could live happy ever after, like it all said. But life was not a dream. They all had to give up on something to reach the sweet target at the end, like school or health. But left the love of your life was too high a price.
Too high.
-
He asked her the same question, long after they stopped being lovers - when they became something less yet something more. She met a replacement, eventually. And he met one, too. But still. The process was a guilty pleasure between them, and even it was wrong, none of them wanted to stop.
"Are you okay?"
He would whisper on the phone at ten past two, when his girlfriend was asleep.
"Are you okay?"
She would sigh when his deep voice vibrated through the line, sent chill and butterflies to her body.
Was she okay?
-
And the engagement happened, so. The replacement slid the ring to her finger.
Everyone cheered. Her two best friends, Scott and Mitch, pulled her into a tight hug. Kevin laughed the most lively laugh she had ever heard, and even Ben and Esther came closer to wish her and the replacement the best.
