Jace

"I found him!" Red shouts excited. "Luke Garroway, 125 North Russell Street Fallon, NV 89406. Home phone is 775-114-2011."

"That's great! We can use a burner phone to call him," I suggest. "That way we can take the battery out and Valentine won't be able to track it. Just in case he's tapped Luke's phone."

"Okay, that's a good idea. I'll call him," Red decides.

"You sure you don't want me to," I offer.

"No, I can handle it," Red replies, and I can see that fire in her eyes.

"Okay Red if you're sure," I concede, knowing I'm no match for her level of stubbornness. I remember the first time I saw that fire.

We were....six. No, I'd just turned seven, and Red was still six. Alec insisted Red had bad girl germs. He said, "Girls are bad. Clary, leave Jace alone."

Now, Red being a feisty, scary, yet small six year old told him, "Jace and I are friends. I like playing with him, and he likes playing with me. Our germs already mixed because he share our toys and food." To which, Alec had no responce and walked away. It was hilarious to me because Alec was so set against me playing with her. Then after that, he didn’t mention it again.

Clary called the number with the burner phone, and I can tell from the deep voice, a man answers. What happens next, I wouldn't have guessed in a million years. Red abruptly hangs up the phone as tears fall from her face. She looks at me, and all she can do is shake her head. "Red, what's wrong?" I ask concerned.

"That....that was...my....Valentine. He found Luke and....my mom. He...he said he finally...got rid of...her. Luke got in the way, and he....took care....of him too. Jace h....he....said he was coming for me. He...he said it was going to be slow and....painful for me. He was going....t.....to make me.....re....regret ever opening my....p.....pathetic mouth," Red explains through the sobs. "I've got to get away!" Red frantically begins packing all of her stuff into the black backpack her mom brought.

"Red, calm down. Can't we just call the police," I try.

"Jace, do you know how many people are in this town?" Red waits. "There are 8321 people. The next few towns in any direction aren't much bigger. Valentine, he's the chief of police. If...He puts out a missing persons report or claims I'm some bad criminal, the other towns will hand me over. I have to run now, while I still have a chance."

"Red, I'm not letting you leave alone," I reply. I promised Jocelyn I wouldn't leave until she got back. I can't leave her, she has no one left.

"Jace it's okay, you have a life to get back to. You have your girlfriends, life, and family to get back to. I....I don't, so I can leave," Red manages, but then the tears stream down her face. She falls onto her knees, and I hold her on the floor.

"Red, I'm not leaving you alone while your being hunted," I declare. Then I try to soothe her, "Shhhhh, it's going to be okay. I won't let anyone hurt you." After Red falls asleep, I carry her to the bed. I call my mom's phone.

Hi mom. I...I need to tell you something.

Honey, it's okay. You can tell me anything.

Clary and I...

Jace, did you get her pregnant?

What! No! Her dad...he abuses her. We've been hiding out since graduation. Her mom went to a friend for help and now they're both missing. I told Clary I wouldn't leave her all alone. I..we're going to run away together, until we can figure out how to make this work. Mom, I have to keep her safe.

I understand son, you love her. Always have, always will. Please be careful and call me once in a while, so I know you're both okay.

Of course mom. I love you. Please explain this to Izzy, Alec, and Robert. You guys need to stay leave now. Valentine could come after you. I really wish I could've said a proper goodbye, but this is time sensitive.

I love you son.

I love you too mom, bye.

I decide to try and figure out how were going to escape. I mean, by car won't work. By bus won't work. Neither will train, subway, or even ship. Then it hits me. We're going to have to change our names, appearances, switch cars, and it'll be tight. We'll have to be hiding in hotels most of the time, and drive at night.

I lay with Red for a few mintues before I decide we need to get things started soon. "Red, it's time to get up," I whisper in her ear. "We've got a head start on your...Him and we need to keep it."

"Jace, you can't stay with me. I don't want him to hurt you. I...If he finds you, he'll hurt you. I'll be fine on my own," Red argues.

"Red, your supposed to be recovering from a concusion. I'm not leaving you, and that's final. I already called my mom and told her," I respond.

"Jace, what are we going to do?" Red asks.

"Well, I don't know where we're going, but I know how to get there. We're going to have to change our names, appearances, switch cars, and it'll be tight. We'll have to drive at night. I thought we should decide together where we go," I explain.

"My...Valentine He knows everywhere I'd go, Jace," Red replies.

"Okay, there's this secret cabin in the woods my family owns. We haven't gone there in years. The best part is, it's in my cousins last name, so Valentine won't be able to find it," I explain. "There's only a teeny tiny problem; it's a long ways from here."

"How long?" Red asks.
