My pills are almost gone even though they were supposed to last two weeks - it's been four days since getting home. Sarah has barely left her room, refusing to walk in Summers room at all. I'm in my room though. You know, I always wanted my own room. If you ever had a twin or sibling, you'll understand. This, however, is not the way I wanted to get it.
Walking to the hallway cupboards, I grab a few sheets and walk back to my room to cover Ryan's stuff which hasn't been touched.
In doing so, I became violently ill after seeing a picture of us as toddlers. I guess it could be my steady diet of pain meds, lack of eating most the time, or something like the flu. But to tell you the truth, I don't think it's any of those things. I think it's karma and I deserve every bit of it.
After an hour praying to the porcelain gods (My mom always said that when someone was sick in the bathroom), I felt a little better. Physically at least. Mentally was a whole different beast.
(Text message from Keegan) "Hey, I want to come see you."
(Text message from Casey to Keegan) "I'm not home."
(Text message from Keegan) "I'm at the front door and I'm not leaving"
Ugh, why is he so persistent?
I brush my hair, and throw on a shirt that hasn't been worn for that past two days.
"Hey.", I tell Keegan as I open the door.
"Hey.", he said with sympathy.
"Look, I'm not really in the mood to talk."
"That's fine. We can just sit.", he said in a way I knew he was not about to give up. I open the door a little further to let him in.
.....
A complete hour goes by with us just sitting on the couch, staring out the sliding glass doors that lead to the backyard. Even looking at the pool reminds me of Ryan. She hated water, sand, the sun. Sarah would always joke how if Ryan were a fish, she'd be the only one to drown. I mean, she even hated the rain. She said it always smelled like dirt and worms.
Ryan always wanted to be different though. She wished she was a leftie, always thought she was adopted (Hello! Identical twin here), and claimed to have ADHD. That girl could read a billion books in an hour though, without a single movement. She's was quirky and weird and it made it her all the better.
"Where's Sarah?", Keegan asked. I just shrugged my shoulders.
"You don't know?"
"No Keegan. I don't."
"You hungry?", he asked.
"No, I'm not.", I replied knowing I'm not anything anymore.
"I know you're going through a lot. Things I might never understand. But-"
Cutting him off, "Keeg, please don't. I know you want to help but nothing anyone does or says can change what happened.
Tears began filling up my eyes as a single tear drips down my face. Keegan reaches to wipe it off when Sarah walks in the front door. I quickly wipe the tear off myself before looking at Sarah.
"Hm. Hello Keegan.", she tells him while looking at me as if I did something wrong again.
"Hey Mrs. Morgan. I just want to extend my condolences."
"That's very kind. Thank you. The funeral for -", Sarah takes a moment before finishing her sentence.
Clearing her throat, she says " For Summer and Ryan will be this Tuesday. Please let your family know."
His family has always been cool with ours.
"I will.", he tells her. Sarah tries to manage a smirk before going upstairs.
"Why didn't you tell me it was Tuesday?"
"I found out when you did. She didn't tell me yet", I mumbled as I looked away. "I'm gonna lay down. I'm tired."
He saw himself out while I went upstairs to my bathroom in my room. Looking in the mirror, I don't even see myself anymore. I see Ryan. Grabbing my bottle of pills I take two of the last five.
What am I going to do when they run out?
