The next day you had nothing to do. It was an ordinary Sunday morning and there was no school to worry about until tomorrow, leaving all of Sunday open to do whatever. Your mind was swimming in ideas until K.O, the helper from the Bodega, flashed into your mind. He was fun to be around but you couldn't just show up out of the blue and distract him from work. Maybe if you acted like you needed help finding something again, you could talk to him again! It was better than doing nothing all day.
Scooping up some money, you decided to buy something - at least now you had a reason to go there without looking like an idiot or a weirdo. You hastily left, ignoring siblings and parents as they muttered things to you. As you closed the door you heard your mother call out to you, being cut off by the door.
Continuing down the street, you thought about how you were going to play it cool. You couldn't just go straight up to him and ask for help- that would be weird. Maybe getting his attention would look more normal. Nope. You skimmed over ideas which wouldn't work until your foot hit a loose flagstone and made you stumble, snapping you out of your trance. Looking up, you discovered you were already at the edge of the car park.
Without hesitation, you walked straight in as to not look strange and speed walked into an isle. As you walked off you caught a glimpse of the girl at the counter. She was looking at you intently, like a child waiting for the jack to spring out of the box. You didn't realise how high your heart rate was until you stopped to look at things, tearing your eyes away from the girl at the counter. Breathing in deeply, you took a long sigh before turning around and walking further down the isle and away from the strange girl. As you reached the end of the isle, you noticed muffled chatter from the next isle over.
"Listen kiddo, I know what I'm doing, I'm an expert."
"Rad, she's not even here!"
"Well, when she comes I'll help you out."
"Rad no!"
"Why not?!"
"Only because she's not my girlfriend doesn't mean she has to be."
"Ugh, you're making this difficult. Just leave it to me."
"Please don't do anything stupid Rad."
"Don't worry!"One of the voices seemed a little familiar while the other was completely foreign to you. There were loud footsteps coming your way and you panicked slightly, walking a little up the isle and looking at random things. Making sure you didn't go too far up as to be in the eye line of the girl, you went to the other side. The footsteps sounded behind you but you didn't turn around, expecting just a random pedestrian was behind you looking at items.
"Oh hey. You were the girl talking to my buddy K.O right?"
You were the only other person in the isle. Oh god. Turning around to face whoever was talking to you, you found a pair of legs and some black boots.
"Haha. Up here."
Following the voice, you looked up to be greeted by a worker. His skin was turquoise and he had curly teal hair, two antennae poking out of it.
"The boy with the red bandana right?" You asked. This wasn't how you were planning your encounter but this was bound to go somewhere.
"Yep. That's him." He smiled. "Anyway I'm here to give you some advice."
"Advice?" You questioned. Why do you need advice?
"Yep." He confirmed. "K.O likes POW cards. Make sure to bring them up next time you guys chat. He'll definitely want to get with you then."
"Get with me?" You mumbled, confusion clouding your mind.
"Yep. He'll be on you like white on rice." He winked walking off and disappearing into a different isle. You felt your face grow hot. Did he think...?
"Oh hey."
Once again, another voice.
"I-I didn't catch your name last time." Your eyes traveled up from the floor to meet K.O's bright eyes. You didn't register what he said until you finally glanced away.
"O-Oh! Right. My name is (Y/n)." You smiled. He returned the look.
"That's a nice name." He beamed. "I hope you're having a better day than yesterday."
You couldn't help but smile. He was so sweet. Almost everyone you knew - which was next to no one - didn't care about how you were.
"I am. You really cheered me up." You admitted. K.O's cheeks adopted a slight red-ish tint as he smiled more.
"Oh- I forgot to ask," You started pulling in his curiosity. You thought about what his friend said - it was at least worth a shot. "Do you like POW car-?"
"I LOVE POW CARDS!" He gasped, his eyes growing wide as he grabbed your hand. He ran you over to a POW card machine. "We even sell them here!"
He looked like he'd won the lottery. Giggling, you took out your money. "Well lucky me that I need more, huh?"
Standing by the machine you both talked about what cards you had and you bought yourself, and K.O a pack. While you were both absorbed in the cards and chatting, you didn't notice the strange girl and the worker from before chatting discreetly and smiling at the two of you. You must've lost track of time because you hadn't caught sight of the ever growing shadows and the slowly falling sun. Eventually, the store grew empty making everyone look to the door when it opened for the last time. A woman walked in wearing all purple, a red bandana and white boots. K.O smiled and ran up to her.
"Mommy!" He laughed as she hugged him tightly.
"There's my little peanut!" She chuckled in response, ruffling his hair. Her eyes landed on you.
"Ooooh! K.O did you make a new friend?" She asked with a grin. K.O nodded and told her your name.
"Well sorry to ruin the fun you two but K.O we need to get going." She frowned lightly. K.O kept his smile though.
"Bye (Y/n)! I'll see you at school!" He called out, following his mom out the door. You waved lightly, as he left and he waved back.
After watching them drive off you felt eyes burning holes into the side of your head. You glanced at the counter to see both of them staring at you with huge grins making you slightly uncomfortable. You'd been here all day and hadn't bought anything. Quick on your feet, you went up to the counter and bought some gum, just to look at least a little normal.
After paying you made sure to walk fast, not wanting to hang around with those two just eyeballing you.
Upon arrival home, you were questioned about were you were and what you were doing. Knowing your siblings and how they tease, you just chose to lie. It was for the best - at least for your sake it was.
