When the bright light woke you up, it cut through your closed eyelids like a blade, pulling you reluctantly from sleep. You groaned softly, shifting under the covers, and then tugged the duvet up over your head in a futile attempt to block it out. The softness of the bed, the unfamiliar scent of the room—none of it felt right. You wanted to open your eyes and find yourself back in your own room, your own bed, with everything exactly as you had left it.
But when you finally gave in and rubbed your eyes, blinking against the brightness, you realized that this was not your room. It was nothing like your room. Your heart lurched as you sat up quickly, the sudden movement sending a wave of dizziness washing over you. The light was harsh, flooding in through a large window on the opposite wall, far too bright for the time you remembered falling asleep. When you went to bed, the sun had barely set—it couldn't possibly be morning already, could it?
You threw back the covers and swung your feet off the bed, your bare toes sinking into the soft carpet below. The room was eerily quiet, and you scanned your surroundings for something familiar—a clock, a photo, anything that might anchor you to reality. You reached for the watch on your bedside table, desperate to confirm the time. But before you could grab it, you saw something else, and your breath caught in your throat.
A girl sat cross-legged on the floor, staring up at you with an expression that was both curious and amused. Her hair, the same shade as yours, fell over her shoulders in familiar waves. Her eyes—your eyes—bore into you with an intensity that was impossible to ignore. Even her face was yours, though it looked different, older, as if time had carved subtle lines into her features. She wore a dark blue costume, unlike anything you owned, adorned with strange, glowing elements that pulsed with a faint light.
You froze, heart hammering in your chest. The logical part of your brain screamed that this was impossible, but there she was, sitting in front of you like a living reflection.
"What...?" Your voice came out as little more than a croak. "Who are you?"
The girl laughed, and the sound sent chills down your spine—it was your own laugh, unmistakably. "Hiya," she greeted casually, as if this were the most ordinary thing in the world. "I thought you'd never wake up."
The familiarity of her voice, identical to yours in pitch and tone, made your skin prickle. You opened your mouth to speak, but no words came. The air felt thick, like you were moving through water, and your mind struggled to make sense of what you were seeing.
She rose to her feet with an easy grace, dusting off her costume. "Before you start freaking out," she continued, a playful smile tugging at the corner of her lips, "yes, I am you. I'm from the future." She said it so matter-of-factly, like it wasn't the most outrageous claim anyone had ever made.
The admission was enough to snap you out of your daze. "You're... me?" you repeated, your voice barely a whisper. "From the future?" The idea was absurd; your brain scrambled to process the implications. Wasn't meeting your future self supposed to cause some kind of catastrophic paradox? Wasn't this the sort of thing you'd seen in science fiction movies, not real life?
She must have seen the panic in your eyes because she rolled her eyes dramatically. "Oh, come on, don't make that face," she said, crossing her arms. "I promise, you're not going to implode or anything. I've got this all figured out. As long as we don't, you know, touch each other or do anything stupid, we're fine. No time paradoxes here."
You stared at her, still struggling to comprehend. "But... how are you here? Why are you here?"
Future-you let out a deep sigh, as though she had anticipated this reaction but still found it tiring. "Alright, I'll explain," she began, pacing slowly in front of the window. "Something happened in your timeline—something that didn't happen in mine. You made a mess. I guess I can't say I'm entirely surprised; you still don't have full control over your Quirk. But it's bad enough that I had to come back to fix it. Sort of."
