Upon the idea you were a student coach for your university, you were required to attend every game. So you did, and when the time came that your school was playing Oikawa's you were more than estatic to watch the game from the sidelines. Oikawa's team was higher ranked than the university you attended, but on paper, both teams were equally powerfully, much to you satisfaction.
It first was two weeks away, then several days, then the day came. You were more than prepared, but so were your boys, Iwaizumi especially. His attitude became antsier the morning of, and since it was a home game, hundreds of fans would be attending, adding to his fear.
That first moment when your boys stepped onto the court as the beginning whistle blew, that was the moment you could feel the weight of the match lingering over them. They all appeared to be strong and keep their go-lucky smiles, but even Semi was having difficulty keeping his happy face. So in turn, you kept smiling at them, even though you could feel your boyfriend's weariness on the other side of the court. You could basically feel his eyes drilling into the back of your head.
Whoever said Oikawa wouldn't be a jealous boyfriend was very wrong. The boy liked the things he claimed as his, and he sure as hell didn't want anyone else touching something that he "claimed".
From the beginning moments of the match, you sat beside your uncle, who was either fidgeting anxiously or pacing in front of the bench. The match had several spectators filling it, and that was for warmups only. Now that the game had begun, the stands were packed, adding to the rest of the teams nerves.
As per usual, Oikawa started the game off with a serve, which had only grown more powerful since highschool according to Iwaizumi. Several girls gave their yells and screams of approval and desire when he began to bounce the ball, readying himself for the beginning of the match.
His first serve went smack to Nishinoya, who was the former libero of powerhouse school Karasuno. He received the strong serve with ease as he got it to Semi, who in a very confusing almost reckless movement, set the ball to Iwaizumi, who then finished the point with a kill. Semi's reckless, almost tactless movements made it hard for the blockers to read, which was partially why the point had finished as quickly as it had started.
You could see Oikawa click his tongue on the court, until the very next point in which they added a 1 for them onto the scoreboard. His face broke out into a smile as you watched him intensely focus on each of the players, mapping out their next move.
The set continued in the same pattern, with each team gaining the lead, then losing it. The set was extensive but was finished with a kill from Iwaizumi, who kept enduring through the endless balls set from Semi, favoring his power over the other wing spikers.
The boys looked relieved once the first set was over, each boy was dripping with sweat as they swept by the bench, briefly getting a drink and using the towel to soak up their salty perspiration as your uncle listed out things they needed to work on. You pitched your thoughts as well, specifically aimed at the middle blockers to watch Oikawa's dirty plays, which he was indeed the master of.
You briefly looked over at the other team, yet, despite Oikawa being the type to usually have full focus, his eyes were on you. You weren't sure whether you should be upset at him for being distracted, or being upset at yourself for being a distraction.
However, within the brief moment you caught glances, you turned back to the boys instead so you wouldn't keep him from his team.
Once the whistle blew the boys were back on the court and much to your distaste, the boys began to fall behind halfway through the second set. Although the current emotion running through you did not at all prepare you for what was to happen next.
You were sitting on the edge of the bench with eyes set on Oikawa who was beginning to dominate the game, although Semi had his own talents that were quite handy.
Your university was down 12-18, which was going to become hard to get back from once they hit 20.
Even more so with the fact that Oikawa was working extremely hard to bring the point numbers up. He was dripping in sweat and the glint in his eyes was almost terrifying. His movements were becoming less smooth and more rigid, which meant his knee was probably hurting him as well.
So, it drew to 16-20 within the next few minutes. You gripped the edge of the bench as you could sense your uncle tensing as well. Oikawa went up, with his usual form, but something was off, he seemed to favor his right knee as he went into the air. You could tell from the look on Oikawa's face that a shot of pain went through his body.
Within that moment, time seemed to freeze as he miss-set the ball, spiraling off to the side away from the wing spiker. But what was even more shocking was the fact that his body seemed to collapse in the air, falling back down with out any comfort in the landing.
His right knee, also his weak knee, took the brunt of the landing, twisting underneath his body as it then proceeded to give out. You watched in horror as his body continued falling, once the long seconds were over, he lay there, trying to get back up.
Oikawa had crumpled falling onto his right side with his right leg sprawled out and left leg to his side. He was trying to push himself off the gym floor. He tilted his head back in pain as he tried straightening out his right leg, which seemed lifeless. You bit your lip and watched as Iwaizumi rushed underneath the net to his best friend's side, putting his hand on his back as he inspected the damage. Then came the athletic trainer and the world seemed to stop once more, everyone was silent, all eyes on the extraordinary setter who looked extremely defeated.
You felt the urge to get up, but your uncle's hand placed on your knee told you to stay put as the rest of players circled around him, his teammates with wide eyes.
From in between the players legs, you could see Oikawa, biting his tongue as sweat dripped down from his temples. His head was titled back and his eyes shut tight with his jaw locked. You felt your heart drop as you could see the worried look on Iwaizumi's face as well as the trainer's.
Soon, a stretcher appeared, then he was placed onto it and there was distinct sirens coming from the back door of the gym. You quickly got up as he then was moved to the ambulance, and his knee looked absolutely destroyed. Yet, you knew the only thing on his mind was volleyball.
He caught your glance and then averted his eyes, before covering his face, hiding the pain and overwhelming emotions he was currently feeling.
You went up to Iwaizumi who wore a deep frown with eyebrows knitted, which matched the sinking feeling in your gut.
"What's wrong with his knee?" You asked anxiously, while the teams broke off to their sides to recooperate for a few minutes. He looked at you, then shook his head. "The trainer said he thinks he tore the tendon in his knee. He believes he needs surgery and that's where they are rushing him to right now. He'll be out for the remainder of the season probably, depending on the tear, he may never be as good as he once was before."
And within that moment, you could sense Oikawa's 'perfect' world begin to seemingly fall apart.
