Somehow, Jace had found a way to get Echo back to the Institute for an audience with the Inquisitor. Echo was less than excited to be in the presence of someone she could feel the hate radiating off of. Jace pushed both Clary and Echo into the office of the institute.
"You wanted to see us?"
The Inquisitor kept her eyes down to her papers, "Yes. I told you I would decide what was next for you once Azazel was vanquished, so here we are."
Echo narrowed her eyes at the woman. She crossed her arms over her chest and leaned onto her hip.
Jace kept his voice strong, "You can do whatever you want with me, but leave Clary and Echo out of this."
The Inquisitor looked up at Jace, "Well, that's not possible. The Clave wants to have the three of you tested to get a greater understanding of your unique angel-blood abilities."
Echo let out a scoff and glanced up at Jace, "Is that what you told her?"
The Inquisitor looked at Echo with confusion.
Jace ignored the Shadowdemon, "No. We'll pass on being lab rats."
Clary swallowed, "No, Jace. I want to do this." Jace looked down at the redhead with slight shock, "I haven't been able to use my runes since we summoned Azazel. I-I want to understand why."
The Inquisitor leaned forward, "Thank you, Ms. Morgenstern." Echo let out an audible breath at their birth name, "Your willingness to put your own comfort aside for the greater good is to be commended." The Inquisitor looked over at Jace and Echo, "You both would do well to follow her example."
Echo cringed, "Hell no."
Jace shook his head, "I'm not a follower."
Clary let out a sigh, "Look, I'll do the testing on my own. When do we start?"
Jace lowered his voice and took a step closer to Clary, "Clary, you don't know the Clave like I do. First, they'll just want you doing circus tricks. The next thing you know, you'll be monitored twenty-four, seven."
"I'll do whatever it takes." Clary's voice was not low.
She looked back up at Jace, "Jace, it's okay if you don't want to do this, but, drawing those runes...for the first time, I felt like there was a reason I became a Shadowhunter. I need to get them back."
Echo shook her head, "God."
Jace glanced behind him to Echo before he looked to the Inquisitor, "I guess it's your lucky day."
"And Echo?"
Echo looked down at the older woman with a dumbfounded look, "Do you honestly think I would want to be cut open to see what makes me tick? God, you're stupider than I thought."
Jace looked down at the demon with wide eyes and Echo shrugged, "What? They don't need to know what the hell I am. And I'd be damned if they caught a whiff. To hell with this monitoring." Echo spun on her heel and walked from the office without another word to either Shadowhunter. She pushed past the guards by the door and down the hall. Echo could still feel the anger inside of her and she wasn't sure where it was coming from. She shouldn't be angry but that was the only emotion that was coming to her at the moment. Echo let out a solid breath and as she rounded the corner her footing sputtered as she almost ran into a body.
She skidded to a halt as she felt hands on her biceps.
"Whoa, there."
Echo looked up at the newest blond in the Institute and saw Sebastian looking down at her. She pulled away from his arms and swallowed, "Sorry." The word was quick and quiet as she went to walk away.
