Before Echo could make it into the hallway, she was ambushed by Jace and Clary. "Hey can you get us to a bookshop?"
Echo wrapped her jacket around her stomach, "Uh, what bookshop?"
"Elliot's bookshop on seventy-third."
Echo was slightly confused but nodded. "Uh, yeah. Why though?"
Clary's eyes turned down, "Something's happened to him."
Echo remembered Elliot. He had been one of Jocelyn's best friends before he went off and opened his own bookshop. Echo's young self had once had a crush on the Warlock.
Echo held out her hand, "Hang on." Echo closed her eyes and imagined the shop in her mind and with a surprising amount of effort, she dropped the trio on the street. Echo let out a breath and followed Clary and Jace into the shop.
Clary was the first to see Elliot and when Echo rounded the corner, the sight of the dead man brought the contents of her stomach up into her throat. Echo clenched her stomach and doubled over onto the street. Echo hadn't eaten much and she was surprised that there was anything to throw up at all. Echo wiped her mouth with her jacket before she straightened up. Echo saw Jace's concern but she let him know that she was fine.
Jace held a sour expression as he observed the area, "See these marks?"
Clary and Echo looked down at the blackish drips on the floor, "A demon was here."
Clary closed Elliot's eyes as Jace spoke, "He was tortured, but this isn't murder. He killed himself."
Clary looked up, "What? How can you tell?"
Jace kept his voice sincere, "The blood from his eyes, I've seen it before. It's a warlock incantation. It's basically their version of a cyanide capsule. I'm sorry."
The shop had been so quiet, that when the glass crunched, they all jumped. Sebastian strode into the bookshop, "Hey."
Clary stood up, "Sebastian? What are you doing here?"
Sebastian glanced at Echo, "I, uh...I saw the alert at the Institute. Is everything under control?"
Jace shook his head, "We're still not one hundred percent sure what happened. There was a demon presence here, but something doesn't add up."
Echo looked up at Sebastian before Clary distracted them by turning their attention to a vase of blackened flowers, "It's Jonathan."
Echo swallowed as Jace spoke, "How do you know that?"
"The flowers. My mom shared a memory from when Jonathan was a baby. He'd done the exact same thing. And the grey demon ichor, that's how Valentine described the aftermath of Jonathan's childhood kills. Jonathan was here."
Sebastian shifted his footing and came up with a cleaver question, "Sorry, who's, uh, who's Jonathan?"
Echo looked up at Sebastian with cold eyes, "He's my twin." Echo saw Sebastian swallow.
"He must be after the Mortal Mirror. If he comes after it again, I'm going to have to deal with him."
Echo looked over to Jace, "What does that mean?"
"It means I'm going to do anything in my power to protect the mirror."
Clary was confused, "You'll kill him?"
Jace nodded, "If that's what it takes."
Echo set her jaw, "You do know that killing him means killing a part of me, right?"
