I woke up the next morning to a warmth enveloping me. I knew right away that it was Gaara. I smiled softly as I turned around in his arms so I could face him. He looked like he was in pain. I gently shook him a few times. He didn't respond.
"Gaara?" I said as I shook him harder. I placed my hand on his forehead and it was burning up. I shot up and was beginning to move out of the bed when I heard his rough voice.
"Don't leave me." He said, his hold on my wrist very loose as if he didn't have the strength to hold tighter.
"I'll be right back. I promise. I'm going to get some soup, a wet cloth, and some medicine. I'll be back as quick as possible." I said slipping out of his grip.
"Don't go." He said again as I left the room.
I ran down the steps and reheated soup and filling a bowl with water, placing a cloth in the water. I placed both bowls on a tray and grabbed some medicine for him.
I carefully ran back up the stairs and to Gaara's room. There were muffled groans from the room. I opened the door and closed it behind me. I looked at the bed and dropped the tray to the floor. The sound of glass shattering filled the room as I saw Gaara. The Shukaku had began to try to take over Gaara. I quickly ran over to Gaara and hugged him.
"It's okay Gaara. I'm here. Just listen to me. Find your way back to my voice." I said as I rubbed his back with one hand and the other played with his hair. He always calmed when I played with his hair. Shukaku was still thrashing around a bit, but not as much as when I had first came in. I continued what I had been doing until the sand fell off and his body fell onto mine. He was slightly panting, out of breath from fighting the Shukaku. I didn't let go of him, even though he didn't hug me back. Soon the shoulder of my shirt dampened. I knew he was crying.
"It's okay Gaara. I'm fine. I'm sorry I left you like that. I was worried about you." I said. His arms and wrapped around me and his crying had lessened.
"Thank you. Thank you for coming back." He mumbled.
"I promised you didn't I?" I questioned. He nodded with his face still on my shoulder. I pulled away from our hug and looked at Gaara's face.
"I like your smile. Can you smile for me again?" He asked.
"Of course," I said smiling at him, causing him to smile. I moved him back onto the bed and lay back down with him. "I'm not leaving you this time." I said "I knew I had dysphoria when I woke up this morning but had brushed it off. Now I realize I shouldn't have." I thought as I played with Gaara's hair. He was hugging me close to himself.
"I feel useless. All I've done is hurt you." He mumbled. I looked at him in shock. I pulled his face so that we were at the same eye level.
"You are valuable because you exist not because of what you do or what you have done, but simply because you are.(1) You mean so much to me that it is impossible to explain." I said.
His face was shocked before he smiled and nodded. He kissed my forehead and rested his face in the crook of my neck. He closed his eyes and his breathing slowed. I smiled and also closed my eyes. We slept most of the day, only waking to eat or to do other necessities.
