Yuna stared at the telephone in their living room. They just had dinner. The moment the telephone rang, she gasped. She waited for the third ring before picking it up.
"H-Hello?"
"Yuna." The voice muttered from the other line. His first word was her name.
She smiled because he couldn't see. "Yes, Yuzuru?"
"We've just arrived here."
"I see." She said. "How was the trip?"
"It's fine. The hotel room here is nice." He said. "Have you eaten?"
"Yes,"
What followed in their short exchange was silence. Unspoken words swirled around the distance that separated them but both were fine hearing the voice of the other.
Yuna could hear his faint breathing.
"Yuna?" was his first word like it was the only word he could think of.
"Mmm?"
"I'm glad to talk to you again."
"What are you saying? We just talked few hours ago."
He could imagine him smiling in the other line, "Yuna, I have to hung up now the socials will start in a bit. I'll call you again tomorrow."
"You will?"
"Of course."
It was Yuna's turn to smile. "Okay."
"Good night."
"Good night."
---
Yuna stared at her book. The printed letters were meaningless. Her mind was travelling somewhere else. Her ears were listening to a different tune.
"I met some of the Korean competitors." Yuzuru told her over the phone in his second night at Hongkong. "They are really nice. The girls are very pretty too."
"Very pretty? Hah! Very pretty my foot." She whispered grudgingly. "Since when did he pay attention to pretty girls?"
Kyoko nudged her nervously.
"What?" She mouthed.
Her seatmate smiled anxiously and moved her head as though telling Yuna to look straight forward. Yuna followed what she was pointing too and realised that her teacher was looking at her way as well as her classmates.
She was called for recitation and she had not even heard it. She was so preoccupied.
"Yes, Ma'am?"
"Were you not listening to me, Kim Yuna?" Her teacher asked.
Yuna instantly glanced at what was written on the board-- a line scribbled in kanji, taken from the book they finished reading for this Japanese Literature class.
"I fall in love over and over again-- Lady Murasaki." She said. "I think Lady Murasaki is mistaken."
"What you made you say that, Yuna?" Her teacher looked amused.
"I don't think it is possible to fall in love over and over again to the same person. Lady Murasaki fell in love with Lieutenant Matsuo when they first met in the woods. I think, the feelings she had for him in the beginning had not changed a bit. It was constant. She fell in love to him once and she had always been."
Her teacher processed her answer so Yuna sat back to her chair. Damn it, she cursed inside her head. Her teacher caught her spacing out in class.
