ON that winter the young love that sprang summers ago bloomed into one that was based on respect and required tons of understanding.
"Did you bring everything?" Yuna said as their hired cab dropped them off Incheon Airport.
Yuzuru shook his head sadly.
"What did you forget?!" She asked in a frantic voice-- the usual tone she had when things failed to be on her way. He suppressed his smile when her iridescent eyes locked gazes with him. "Come on! Tell me so we can go look for it."
Instead of directly answering her question, he raised a patriotic hand over his left chest and said, "My heart. I'm leaving it to you."
Yuna stared at him blankly wondering if her friend's brain lobes were still intact inside his skull. He was blabbering nonsense again for the nth time this weekend and much to her dismay, she fell for each one of these nonsense remarks.
She could not stop her face from turning bright red. Yuzuru, on the other hand, stared at her as though memorizing the lines of her face and slowly said, "Should I announce my retirement when I get back?"
The mention of his retirement brought Yuna back to her senses. "HEY!" She exclaimed and hit him with her bag.
"Aww! That hurts!" Yuzuru cried. "I was just kidding! Can't you take a joke?"
"I can't and I won't if the joke's from you." She pouted.
He raised an eyebrow as though questioning her judgment.
"You're one lame joker." She further added to the wound.
Yuzuru laughed at her remark though. Then, he fixed his cap when he noticed a passerby glancing their way. His eyes warmly gazed at Yuna who was looking down to her feet. Without any word, he moved towards the girl and enveloped her in his arms. "You're making this harder for me."
As he held her in his arms, Yuna did not move. Her thoughts were running miles away. They have decided to take things slow and opted just to stay friends for the time being. She thought that pushing through would make things complicated especially that Yuna still had school and Yuzuru got skating. The next few years would be critical for them as they were both set to chase after their dreams-she graduating and him making it to the next Olympics. A lot of things may happen in that span of time and Yuna could only hope for things to turn out well for them.
She was wondering if when would she see the guy again? After six months? After a year? Now that they were certain of their feelings toward each other, everything else seemed to have turned uncertain for them. Yuzuru eventually noticed her spacing out.
"Smile, Yuna." He mused. "The world needs to witness how beautiful that smile of yours is."
"Shut up, Hanyu." She screeched and Yuzuru giggled.
It would have been another heart-melting moment for them both only if the airport's crew was not gracious enough to interrupt. The speakers inside the airport boomed with the calling for the passengers bound to Tokyo to proceed in the gates for boarding.
"Don't forget to call me when you get there." Yuna reminded him. She, at least, had to make sure that he arrived safely to his destination.
He nodded. "Don't forget about me." He said as he wrapped his arms around her built again.
As they held each other that night, he was just Yuzuru-a young man with blurry vision that had to wear eyeglasses and she was just Yuna-a young woman who was wearing a sunflower beanie in the gloomy winter. In that moment, they were just two ordinary people sharing one heartbeat and nothing else mattered.
