Chapter nineteen

Vincent's P.O.V.

I was in Mississippi now. The hot, southern sun was glaring down at me.

Ahh...the sun. I mused. It didn't bother me, some vampires it did, but not me.

You see, the sun was all mind over matter. You could feel sorry for yourself, and let the sun burn you, or accept it. I naturally chose to accept it.

The sun doesn't burn you physically, but inside. Vampires HATE the sun. Well, the vampires that aren't accepting of it. I rather like it. Its warm, tolerable.

It doesn't hurt us, or make us sparkle. Its just an liability.

Tessa was accepting of the sun also; she was lying on the deck lawn chair, sunglasses over her eyes.

"I'm so glad I have a powerful mind." She sighed, happily.

I looked up from my chair, and stared at her. "What? I doubt YOU have a powerful mind." I laughed. She glared at me.

"I mean, I can control my hatred for the sun. If I didn't, I wouldn't have this gorgeous tan." She gestured to her golden arms. "I suppose that's where the legends come from," she mused. "Vampires hate sun, ergo no tan. Ergo, pale."

I rolled my eyes at her. Tessa was so happy now that Alec finally decided to show his face. After about a few hours of Tessa being tortured by her self esteem of him leaving her, he walked through that door, covered in blood, and scars.

I immediately thought he had lost control and killed a human. Tessa was almost ecstatic. I was disgusted.

He refused to tell us where he was. All he gave away was that he was visiting an old friend, and lost track of the time. According to him, the wrong number on his cellphone was all because he screwed up a digit in his number.

As for the cuts and blood, he said his friend was a bit angry with him. And that she wanted him to learn what he did was wrong. He said that was just how she always was: a bit eccentric and brutal. He said it didn't hurt. Tessa seemed suspicious but was too happy to care.

I beg to differ about that lie he spoke of.

That woman I spoke with, knew something. Something critical to our situation. I know it.

Too bad I couldn't read her mind. I have to know how it is I'm reading. I have to at least have met once before. Or I've even heard of them, and that would help. But I had no idea who that woman was, so I couldn't get a read on her.

Which sucks.

I slumped into my chair, feeling sorry for myself. Tessa had forced me to come here. Apparently, it wouldn't be fun without a chase. I rolled my eyes at that one.

"Can we resort back to that list?" I asked.

Tessa nodded and reached into the back pocket of her jeans. She glanced at it quickly and nodded to herself. "So what is next on the list?" I asked her. A bit afraid of the answer.

"Hunt down the vampire hunter."

I gulped. I was afraid of that. Vampire hunters were dangerous. For all vampires, they were trained and skilled in ways you couldn't even imagine to kill us.

"That's going to be a tough one." Alec said from inside the condo we rented.

Alec hated the sun. Tessa was trying slowly, to push him outside...but I liked it when he was AWAY from me.

"Eh. We can do it." Tessa leaned back into her chair, and crossed her legs. She closed her eyes. Not a care in the world. She didn't HAVE problems.
