Chapter Nine
Lauren leaned down to the dirt road we were on. She kneeled as she placed he nose and inch above the dirt. She sniffed; then crinkled her nose to the awful smell of dirt.
At least I thought the awful smell was dirt. She got up and placed her hands on her hips. She looked at us as she hissed, "vampire."
My eyes widened. "Really? You can tell just like that?"
"Hell yeah." She hissed.
Georgia sighed. "Well was it Vincent? We've been on this road for like, an hour now." She wrinkled her nose up in disgust at the country road we were on.
Lauren nodded. "Uh huh. And by this smell..." She looked up and sniffed the air. "He went that way." She pointed in the direction we came.
"Great." Ali grumbled.
"Well, let's get going. Tom, get the car." I nodded towards Tom, who was leaning up against his parent's car. He grunted and opened up the door for us.
Lauren dusted off the knees of her jeans. "Sorry. But tracking a vampire is difficult. We have to pace ourselves." She shook her head.
We continued back towards town, Lauren sticking her head out the window now and then following the scent.
We followed into a part of town, I recognized. It was near Conrad's house. We continued on, until Lauren said to turn left. Towards the river.
Thank god, for a second I thought we were heading to Conrad's house. That would mean Vincent...I don't want to think about it.
We came upon the large river near the road. That's when Lauren gasped. "Oh god." She mumbled to herself.
"What?" Ali turned to face Lauren.
"I smell...a dead body."
My insides churned. Please don't be...
I looked outside the window and beside the river was an ambulance, police cars, a bunch of people with horrified looks on their faces.
There was also a car smashed up against the tree by the river. And when I say smashed, I say SQUISHED.
Tom parked the car, and in an instant I jumped out and ran over to where the police tape cut off the crime scene.
I saw an officer, and grabbed his shoulder, forcing him to look at me. "What happened?"
He seemed critical to let me know what was going on, but eventually he spilled. "Kid driving that car," He pointed to the smashed up car against the tree. "Got killed in the crash."
I felt my tears well up in my eyes. I had a feeling. I just knew. The cop kept on talking, "He got really smashed up. Broken everything. But the broken neck finally did it." He shook his head. As if he gived a CRAP about the guy. About...Conrad.
The cop walked away, and I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Dana, we don't know if it was him." Georgia whispered softly. I turned around and saw the rest of the group.
"Lauren," I stuttered. I could barely get a word through the crying. "Can...do you think...tell me if it was him."
Lauren nodded, and then she stared off in the direction of the crash. I saw her eyes flash, it seemed she was remembering the accident. Who was in it, and how exactly it happened.
Her eyes flashed back to me. She has this horrible look on her face. "Uh, Dana...I am so...sorry." As soon as the last word was out, I collapsed onto the floor, and buried my head in my hands. I felt the tears come, and I didn't even bother stopping them.
I felt Georgia and Ali's arms around me, but I couldn't acknowledge it at all. I rocked back and forth in the biggest pain I have ever felt.
Lauren pulled me up eventually, and led me back to the car, we all piled in. It was the perfect place to talk about things without the police overhearing.
I still had tears running down my cheeks, but I gathered up my emotions and filed them away for now. Lauren looked like she had something very important to say.
"Dana, this wasn't an accident. I saw how the whole thing went down. And he wasn't killed in that crash." Her eyes borrowed into my face.
I knew what was coming. I nodded for her to continue. Lauren took a breath. "It was Vincent. He faked the whole crash. He killed Conrad." She looked at me, carefully watching to see if I would start crying again. She was clearly uncomfortable with tears.
I knew that was what happened. As soon as I knew that was Conrad, I knew only Vincent could do something this treacherous. "I know it was. I had the feeling."
We were all silent for a moment. No one knew what to say in a time like this. What COULD we say?
We couldn't say anything because no one wanted to say aloud what we were all thinking.
We didn't know how to stop Vincent.
Vincent's P.O.V
I chuckled at the scene before me. Everyone making a fuss over a little accident. Some people were so upset because Conrad was such a 'good boy.'
Ha. If only they knew what a low life that guy really was.
I watching from high up a tree that I was positioned in. I looked over to Dana who was in the car with her friends.
There was Ali. And Georgia and Tom. But...who was that girl?
I peered closer to the car. She was pretty. Sort of...inhumanly beautiful, and she was pale. That means...CRAP.
She was a freakin vampire!
Which meant that she was a vampire hunter. How the HELL did they find a vampire hunter? Impossible!
She had to be stopped. I had to kill her. She can NOT ruin my plans.
I looked closer to the scene inside the car, and saw that the vampire was looking, RIGHT AT ME.
She knew I was here. She could see me, she smirked at me.
Then she turned back to Dana and her friends, and said nothing.
What the...why didn't she come after me? She was a vampire hunter wasn't she?
Or...was she one of those fake vampire hunters? I've only heard of them. They were vampires who went around telling humans they were hunters, and that they could help the humans with their problems. And then...when the humans got really close to them, they killed them and sucked their blood.
There was only a few of those REALLY EVIL vampires left. And I doubt Dana would stumble upon one. She's not that unlucky.
The vampire girl was probably just planning something big to bring me down. Most vampires were theatrical. It was humorous to think that she could beat ME.
Ahh...but don't worry stupid vampire. We will battle eventually. And then we will see who comes out on top.
