"What's taking them so long?" My mother called from the kitchen. As Jackson and Jinyoung were having the time of their lives, I was stuck at home cleaning the lounge.
"I don't know. He's not picking up his phone." I replied, collecting the stray rubbish on the floor.
"Maybe his phone went flat. Go for a drive and see what's taking him so long," Mum suggested, her patience at a minimum.
"He'll be back soon."
"Mark, I can't finish dinner if we don't get the stuff. Just go for a drive and get it, he probably broke down."
"Fine, but don't blame me if the milk goes off by the time I'm home."
"Just go."
"I'll be back soon, with the groceries and my boyfriend. And my best-"
"Go!"And off I went.
Into mothers car and off into the night.
The street lights were brighter than the stars. I got lost in them.~~
I didn't notice the sirens. I was too busy watching the stars and looking at the side of the roads to make sure Jackson hadn't broke down.
~~
I was five minutes away from the shopping centre when I saw the red and blue lights, the crowds and the accident. The traffic was clogged up blocks away from the centre, and I figured it would be easier to park my car and walk to the rest of the way. Other cars had the genius idea of turning around and going through backstreets.
But I had enough time on my hands.
Surprisingly, for an accident, there wasn't much of a crowd. I was thankful, because that means less people to push past.
I didn't want to look at the accident, I hate them. I hate wondering how it happened in the first place, who was involved and how many people survived.
It sends shivers down my spine.
This time was different.
This accident seemed to calmer, not as rushed as all of the others I've seen.
So I had a glance.
One car had crashed head on into a tree. They were surely dead.
The other car had crashed into a street light, the same street lights I had been so awe struck by.
That's why the emergency services were so calm.
Everyone must be dead.
I got past the crowd, and a couple of steps away when I thought of Jackson.
I should tell him there's an accident so he doesn't get caught up in traffic.
Dialing his number, I tried one last time to reach him. And I heard it.
His ringtone.
I ripped the phone away from my ear, and searched around the scene.
Why isn't he answering?
My heart pounded inside my chest as I pushed through the crowd of bystanders, desperately looking for Jackson's phone, and Jackson.
I'm just hoping... praying that my boyfriend is alive. That he's playing a prank on me.
I wish I went with him.
I was at the police tape at this point, my eyes scanning the accident. I first saw the car against the tree. It was grey, the car Jackson took was white. It can't be him.
