We gathered around the TV, Claire and Amy sat on the couch. Emma and Hannah were on the loveseat with Alyssa on the recliner and Nat, Chloe, and I laid on the carpet, Nat clutching a bowl full of French fries.
Emma was telling Hannah a story, so I asked Chloe if she knew what it was about.
"She's just talking about one of our shared classes today," she said with a chuckle, laying on her back.
"What happened?"
"Well, we were in the corner and I was in front of a closet door, so I decided to lean against the door so I could talk to Emma easier, and I hit my head on the hinge."
"Why is that so funny?" I asked, looking towards Emma and Hannah who were laughing their heads off.
"I'll tell you why it's funny. You should have heard what she said when she hit her head!" Emma laughed, overhearing our conversation.
"Don't you dare!" Chloe yelled, bolting upright and glaring at Emma.
"Oh I dare! She said, and I quote, 'Stupid hinge!' " she said in a falsetto voice.
With that, I burst out laughing, along with everyone else who was listening to our conversation.
"Shut up! Idiots," she whined, blushing deeply.
"Oh, I'm sorry. We can't all be smartyheads. The rest of us have to idiots, Miss 4.8 out of 5 GPA," Emma said mockingly.
"I'm going to kill you!" Chloe shrieked.
"Oh, I'm so scared."
"You better sleep with one eye open tonight."
"Oh, come on Chloe-bear. You know we love you, smartypants and all," Nat said teasingly.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," she muttered, rolling her eyes.
"Come on Chlo! You know you shouldn't take my comments so seriously," Emma pleaded.
"Well I can't help it! If you don't want me to take them so seriously, then don't make them!" Chloe responded, regaining control of her calm demeanor. Which could only mean trouble. Whenever Chloe acts calm, when she's really not, it's always bad in the long run.
Last time she did that, Emma and Nat woke up covered in sharpie while Chloe sat at the dining table eating breakfast with an evil smirk. She may not look it, but she can be really evil. I hate it when she grabs my arm and digs her nails into it. It hurts just as bad as getting burned by some oil while my Ma makes her tortillas. That's how much it hurts! And boiling oil hurts a LOT.
"Well, I for one am not getting in the middle of this! I don't want to wake up covered in sharpie," I said looking pointedly at Nat and Emma. You would think at least Emma would know not to get Chloe all wound up. I like to mess with her too, but I (using almost all of my control) know when I'm taking it too far.
"Don't worry Bri. I got my eye on someone else. Hey Hannah. Can I borrow your hair dye?" Chloe asked turning towards me, and then Hannah with an almost sadistic smile on her face. We all knew how much Emma loved her light brown hair color, so she was horrified when Chloe made the implication that she was going to dye Emma's hair purple.
"Ahh!" Emma shrieked, covering her head with her arms and running upstairs. She was back within 30 seconds wearing a knit hat that she had tucked all of her hair into. We all looked towards Chloe to keep an eye on her, like she was a bomb about to blow.
"What?" she asked us.
"We're just waiting. You still have that look in your eye," Claire said cautiously. We all knew that when had that mischievous look in her eye, we had to be careful around her if we didn't want to get stuck in the crossfire. It didn't happen often, because she was very good at keeping control and hiding her emotions, but when it did, it was like a level 5 hurricane mixed with a tornado and a tsunami! You did NOT want to be around for that.
