Fall had settled on the damp ground and I almost forgot about what happened over the past week. I never felt this blissful. Still, I couldn't help but wonder when the next time my sister is going to snap. It might not be so calm. To my surprise, She's now employed at a fast food place.
Thirst clung to my throat like a child clinging to it's mother. I had to eat sooner or later, I needed the strength. I sat in my Cadillac in front of BHS in their parking lot waiting for Sophia.
The sun visors were down and I had my shades on, breathing in deeply, I exhaled and pulled out a book. Little Women - which had been Sophia's before she gave it to me, arguing that it was the best book she'd ever read. I've been around for a century and I've never even thought of this book.
I opened the hard cover and began reading. The book was set in a Victorian era, which I think was probably the most boring time in history. I held a very special place in my heart for this type of pessimism.
For the moment, I though I would never escape this world... Until I heard a bell ring from the building. I closed the book and put it in the glove box before carefully pulling around to the pick up place. Sophia walked out of the building, carrying herself with such ease and confidence I found it hard to think of a time where she wasn't. I stopped breathing when I spotted someone else with her. Her hand was laced with Jessie's and I felt a fire ignite in my chest. I tried not to act so anxious or antsy, but I honked at her because after all, I was picking her up from school today.
She whipped around and her face lit up when she saw me. I couldn't help but smile at her as I watched her say goodbye to Jessie. But then I saw regret as she turned towards the car. She opened the door and sat down, closing it. She let out a sigh.
"So, how was school?" I asked even though I didn't really care.
"It was fine."
"Did you have fun with Jessie?" I glanced at her as we pulled out of the parking lot.
"It wasn't like that." She murmured.
I let out a light chuckle and said, "I'm sure it wasn't."
"It really wasn't-" I cut her off.
"Do you do this with all your boyfriends? Lead them on, tell them how much they mean to you? Make them fall for you? And then turn around and be with someone else?"
"I'm really sorry Luke. I - I... I just forgot about it okay?"
"Forgot about what? The promises you made to me, or Jessie?"
After that, the car ride was silent.±
"She really did that?" Calum asked, raising his eye brows. We were lounging in our living room and watching TV.
"Yeah, I'm done with her right now. So if she comes over or anything, I'm not home." We chuckled when I said that. On cue, I felt the phone in my pocket vibrate. I answered it with an annoyed snare.
"What do you want, Sophia?"
"I wanted to tell you I'm sorry. Jessie and I were never dating, he only took me on a few dates. I told him that my heart belonged to you."
I could feel excitement and happiness build up inside me. It seemed as if all my anger towards her disappeared. No. I am still angry. I just need a while to get over it.
"That's sweet. I'm sorry Sophia, but I just need time to blow some steam off. It's gonna take some time." With that, I hung up.
I looked over at Calum who was staring at the TV.
