We pull up to literally a mini concert. "Whoa," I say, my disbelief and awe show through my voice.
"Come on." Tobias grabs my hand gently and pulls me out of the limo. We enter through the back entrance and walk down the hall into a room with four other bands prepping for their time on stage. I gulp.
We occupy a corner of the room and lounge around, waiting our turn. Our time spot is later in the night so we still have a bit.
"You doing all right?" Timony bumps my shoulder in a friendly way.
"Yeah, I'm gonna be okay.
Just been nervous all day," I say, offhandedly.
They look at me funny for a moment. Then I'm past my breaking point. Sirens start going off in my head. Weewoo weewoo, nervous break down happening. ETA is now. All sanity has left the building, I repeat, all sanity has left.
"What? It's a habit I can't break.
All this nervousness is more than I can take."
"You rhyme when you're nervous?" Jerome inquires in disbelief.
I nod. "Ever since I was young,
That's when this begun.
Mother didn't like it though,
Made her embarrassed so,
She told me to quit
And I before did it." I rock back and forth a bit, my gaze scans the room again.
"Quit what?" Tobias asks, grabbing my shoulders to face me towards him. Concern colors his eyes and I can't help the butterflies in my stomach from going haywire.
I give him a soft, sad smile. "Music, of course.
Was horrible during the divorce."
They look at me with alarm and sympathy. "Why's that?" Timony pushes while Tobias shoots him a dark look.
I smile fondly. "Daddy was a singer,
Mommy was a clinger.
Mommy wanted daddy to stay around.
Daddy didn't want to run his career in the ground.
Daddy made a choice to go.
Mommy's pride had hit a huge blow.
Next day the papers were signed.
And daddy didn't even mind.
A marriage doomed to fail was what this was.
But that's not the saddest part because,
Daddy never came back for his little girl.
Who was the most hurt in the big, wide world." I shrug, not taking a breath through all of that.
Their eyes are huge. "Why didn't you tell us sooner?" Tobias accuses, softly and I resist the urge to roll my own eyes.
