Saturday morning seems to be just like any other morning. Except it isn't. Today is the day of my first gig. Ever. I'm kind of excited about it but my nervousness is running rampant through the streets. The boys and I practiced until late last night and everybody is confident I am ready. Everybody, that is, except me.
I flip off the covers and get a jump start on my day. I told my mother last night that I would be sleeping over at Maydean's tonight. Maydean is supposed to cover for me. After the show, I would be meeting up with her and I would actually be sleeping over at her house so technically I wasn't lying. Just not telling the full truth. I feel guilty but no less inclined to 'fess up.
In the afternoon, I am glad my mother is at work because my nerves would definitely give me away. They are all jumpy and I am very antsy. I wait for the limo to pull up to my steps and hop in. For the first time, I am riding it alone.
During the ride, my mind is going ninety miles an hour and, by the time we approach Tobias's house/mansion, I am high strung.
The limo pulls to a stop and I hop out, handing the driver some cookies I made last night. I feel terrible he has to drive us everywhere without even a thank you or such so I got spunky last night and whipped some cookies up to show my appreciation. I also wanted to see if cooking really calms the nerves. It doesn't. Not for me, at least.
He shoots me a kind smile and pulls away from the curb. I walk up to the mansion doors and enter. I head towards the studio and slip inside.
"Hey! You made it!" Timony plants a kiss on my cheek.
"Yeah barely," I mumble. Besides, I think to myself, it's not like I couldn't make it. You'd drag me along.
They sense my nervousness but conversation flows like normal. Or as normal as we can be.
"My sister is waiting for you in the back room," Jerome informs me. So she agreed after all. I kind of wanted to use her as an excuse that I couldn't go if I didn't have a disguise...
Regardless of my thoughts, I thank him and head toward the back. At the door, I am greeted by a model thin, curly-haired blonde who towers over me. "Oh, you're quite a looker," she tells me. Her eyes scan my face and then down my body. "But Timony was right. You dress like a spinster." Her mouth forms a straight-line. "Luckily, I will be able to make you unrecognizable! And irresistible to boot. I'm Talia." She winks.
Before I can claim that I do not, in fact, dress like a spinster, she spins me around and forces me into a seat. She then puts a black salon cape over my shoulders. "How short do you want your hair?" she asks, taking the bun out of my hair and brushing her fingers through it.
I give her a look of alarm. "Um, not cut at all." Especially by someone I don't even know.
She sighs like I've just burst her bubble. "Then we'll just do with a trim. Bor-ing!"
She washes my hair and towels it dry. Afterward, she brushes it and I hear dainty little snip snips going on. After a bit more of that, she brushes out my hair again and finishes off straightening it with a hair straightener. Then she pulls it into two side ponytails on top of my head. She uses two scrunchies that were black with silver flecks to secure them. She then pins my bangs back and starts wiping down my face with these wipes. After my face dries a bit, she rubs lotion on it and smears it in. When she's done with that, she goes to town applying makeup. "Some glitter hear, some color there, and wha-la! You are good to go!" She puts the final touches on it and spins me to face the mirror.
I don't recognize myself! I stare in shock at my reflection.
My usual pale skin is now a golden tan. My lips a dark purple. Eyes painted with smokey eye shadow with a hint of purple and just a touch of glitter. Three light purple rhinestones decorate the corner of each eye. My eyebrows plucked and drawn to look quirky and playful.
