Chapter 17: Cassidy

"Tobias," The girl Tobias called Rheanna speaks. Her gaze slides over me, mentally taking stock of me. She has platinum blond hair that's been dyed. She's model skinny and doesn't seem to have not a single ounce of fat. She has long legs and is decent in the chest area. Her big blue eyes give her an innocent look men can't seem to resist. Near her, I can't but feel fat and ugly.

"I can't believe you replaced me with her." I hear the words she's wanting to say, that I'm not good enough. I'd be lying if I said they didn't cut deep.

She starts in again but someone cuts her off, "That's enough Rhea."

My eyes flicker to that person and almost bug out of my head when I see it's the student council president of KC Gifted Students Center.

I start to slide out of sight but Tadashe pushes Tobias aside when he spies me shying away and comes up to me, so close, I have to tilt my head back to look him in the eyes.. He grabs my chin, forcing me to look in his eyes.

"Student Council President Cassidy Codwell. I'd know those eyes anywhere," I gulp, involuntarily, cursing my eye color for the first time in my life. "Who would have thought that the nerdy chick has a great set of pipes?" He gazes down my body and I suddenly feel under dressed. "And other assets as well. Glad to see you ditch the glasses and the hag bun." He smirks.

I feel Tobias tense next to me as I take a step back, wrenching my chin from his grasp. I glance at the other members of Tadashi's band. After getting a good view of the other members, my eyes bug out for the second time. "Cole?!"

He gives a wave and a 'Well, cat's out of the bag' smile. "Looking good pres, though you look even better with your hair down." He winks, gesturing to my messy buns. A million questions go through my mind but I stay silent. Eggshells. Eggshells everywhere! My brain warns me.

"It's sad you have fallen so low that you have to take a nerd and mold her into someone to replace me," Rheanna says, taking on a solemn expression. Sarcasm drips from her next words. "Must have been difficult." That viper!

I glance at Tobias willing him to deny it, or even stick up for me, but when he doesn't, I harden my heart. He just stares at her. He's in love with her, I realize. It hurts so much I expected to look down and see blood spewing out my chest but of course it's all emotional so there's no physical wound. Of course, if it was physical, it'd probably heal faster. This'll leave scars.

Rheanna walks up to Tobias and wraps her arms around his neck. "But I can't help it if your delightful group of idiots is no matched for Crushed. Don't you wish I was back?" She pecks him on the lips then her gaze slides to mine. Mine, her body language reads.

Tadashe steps forward from where he was whispering with Cole. They had been staring at me the whole time, gesturing back and forth. I meet Cole's gaze and he locks eyes with mine. His calculating look is back. Both of theirs. I glance between the both of them.

"You want Rheanna back?" Tadashe asks, innocently, " You can have her. In exchange for Miss Pres. there."

I whip my head towards Tobias just in time to see Rheanna push away from Tobias and turn to screaming in rage at Tadashe. Tobias and I lock eyes for a second but I see longing in his eyes and I already know his choice. So I don't wait for his answer.

I bolt.

I hit the pavement outside and keep on running. I briefly think I hear footsteps pounding behind me and that stirs me into action. I've never been much for running but when it suits me just fine I can run with the best of them. So I force all my energy to pumping my legs to get out of there.

It's down pouring rain and, even if they really did come out to find me, they wouldn't be able to see three feet in front of them. After a bit, I seek shelter under a awning and whip out my barely dry cell phone, calling Maydean. She answers on the third ring.

"Hey," I sniffle. Snot starts running down my face. "Can you please come by and pick me up. Bring me some clothes and makeup remover. I'm on the corner of Broadway." I hang up without waiting for an answer, knowing full well she'd be here in five minutes. The best friend code dictated it so.

She didn't disappoint. She pulls up in a silver mini van and I hop in the back. She hands me a change of clothes without asking any questions and I proceed to change and clean up. I hop in the front seat and flip down the visor for the mirror. I begin taking off the makeup.

Slowly, the whole story comes out of me including my feelings for Tobias and his feelings for his ex. I cry and cry and cry and Maydean sits there giving me a comforting presence to talk to, which is all I want.

Eventually, the tears dry up and I have to clean up again. My face is a wreck. Well, at least you won't be recognized, a snide voice in my head states. I find myself laughing without humor. It sounds dead.

We stop at the grocery store to pick up Ben and Jerry's tub ice cream and proceed to head to her house. We sneak the ice cream up to her room, bypassing her parents which is a blessing in itself. We then switch into pajamas and we binge on ice cream and Switched at Birth episodes until late into the night when we finally just fall asleep. By morning, the ice cream that is left has melted.

Poor Cassidy. She has finally recognized her feelings but now there is another obstacle in her way. The ex! Will she pursue her feelings or just feel that her feelings are unnecessary and toss them aside?
