119th Poem: Fear

Fear,

a fearful emotion in itself,

one that can chill us to the bone.

A queer abstract noun, usually unseen,

except on the faces of the scared, terrified, and brave,

those who feel trapped,

who feel like they are at the end of their wits,

a child fearing a bad grade,

a parent fearing for their family's wellbeing,

fear in those who want to express themselves,

but are afraid of the common sneer,

fear in those who are very protective of someone else,

fear in those who operate on mere ignorance,

fear that a once clear and certain path will veer out of focus...

Fear,

a driving emotion

prevalent in even the most courageous,

it consumes some of us until we follow it's direction,

whether it be the right path or the road to destruction.

Fear can become a supreme ruler,

take over and lead us to our graves.

Fear can shake the earth, turn us all

into a global mind set in a frenzy,

break people down,

tear them apart,

ruin families and beautiful masterpieces of art,

turn peer against peer,

so all bonds and ties are lost,

make someone jump off of a pier.

Fear can sear our hearts with the burn of its consequences.

Those who are scared, terrified, or

trapped are driven to make rash

decisions, hoping to protect

themselves or their loved ones, no

matter what... all because of fear.

The brave fear for those they cannot

save, fear for others instead of

themselves. Often the brave are as

scared as those who are not, they just

choose not to show fear and act

through courage.

I have fears.

My fears seem just, but could just as easily be ridiculous,

I fear for the future, for myself, for others.

I fear that my thoughts will consume me and I'll be left as a shell.

I fear that I'm not good enough, even for God's love,

unworthy, undeserving, of anything, anyone.

I fear that I'll never be enough, enough to get the job I want,

enough to please the people I love,

enough to get into a decent college to build up my craft,

enough for someone to love me for me,

you know, that "like like" stuff.

I fear.

I fear.

I fear.

And I know you fear too.

Fear is but a sheer state of mind,

an emotion that makes us tense up,

our adrenaline heightened for our fight or flight.

Fear can rule a nation,

a national sweep, compelling us to isolate ourselves,

to discriminate.

It's a powerful dictator that always tries

to lead us down a straight path,

but a path that is straight is quite out of date,

a false appearance making us stop seeing straight,

the answer is right there, right under our noses—

the road must be crooked, twisted and curved,

because things are never truly easy and there are always ups and downs.

I'm not a seer,

so I don't know the future,

but according to C.S. Lewis's Screwtape,

"Nearly all vices are rooted in the future.

Gratitude looks to the past and love to the present;

fear, avarice, lust, and ambition look ahead...

When the present pleasure arrives, the sin is already over."
