As I walked back home, the coldness of the air and heat radiating from the sun seemed to battle above me, fighting for control. A radiant heat would quickly transform into a blistering cold, before warming back up again, only to cool down.

My phone had begun to vibrate in my pocket. Answering the call, an anonymous voice answered on the other side.

"Hello, is this Mr. Goodman?" The voice asked.

"Yes, this is him." I responded.

"Mr. Goodman, we have reason to believe that we have apprehended the suspect in your recent shooting." The voice started. "However, we need your confirmation to verify the validity of the arrest before we can continue with the court hearings. Would it be possible for you to come in today?" It concluded.

"Um... could I come in another day, say next weekend?" I suggested, not in the mood to pursue the investigation.

"It's crucial that you come as soon as possible." The voice replied, indirectly urging me to come before hanging up the call.

Forcing myself, I trudged over to the sheriff's office, being lead into a hallway. Darkness overtook the hallway as we continued down its seemingly limitless length. Every-so-often, a reassuring light would creep from above us, bringing sections of the darkness. Soon the end of the hallway came into sight, containing just a sole black door, lonely in a cloud of darkness.

Taking a deep breath, I twisted the cold silver knob, slowly inching the door open. Stepping into the room, the door squeaked closed behind me, it's hinges screaming as it swung close, finally finishing off with a study thud as it slid back into its metal frame.

From the darkness, I witnessed as the back of a head slowly came to fruition, followed soot by the rest of the body. This body had long, frizzled black hair, flakey in texture, containing just the slightest tinge of brown that managed to barely break free of the dark coating under the small stream of illumination originating from a singular window.

With a slender figure, the body was about average size, maybe a bit taller. It looked out of place in a bright orange jumpsuit.

Slowly turning around, the body stayed still, with its heads pointing downwards to the floor. Studying the figure, I noticed that her arms. Slender and long, reaching down pushed her thighs. Her veins were popping out of her arm, dark red in color.

Gently, the figure he began to raise it's head, uncovering Bex's face. Red blemishes were scattered all throughout her face whilst her lips appeared to be chapped and dried. Her eyes had looked to be marbled over, cold. Without emotion. Deep wrinkles had cut themselves into her skin under those emotionless eyes. These wrinkles were themselves surrounded by dark-black circles.

Silence had blanketed the moment, each of us studying the other. It was not an awkward silence, but more of a confrontational silence.

"I wasn't examining for you." Bex spoke up, in a quiet and raspy voice. "That bullet should have landed in Jonah's skull." She continued. A rage could be sensed, forthcoming in her voice.

"Why?" I asked in a demanding and assertive voice.

"Do you guys think I'm dumb. I'm oblivious." Bex started, referring to herself. As she spoke her voice continued to rise. "You don't think that I know that that fuckboy got my Andi pregnant!" She said, her voice now booming, echoing down off of the concrete walls.

"And that justifies attempted murder!" I said, stepping up into her face.

"Mabey it does. Andi needs revenge." She said, backing down.

"How, buy letting her unborn kids grow up without a father. Just because you couldn't be a mom doesn't mean you have to ruin Andi's chances too!" I yelled harshly, my face void of any empathy.

Just then the door shrieked open again as the Sheriff walked into the cell.

"Did we get the right suspect Mr. Goodman?" The Sheriff asked

"Ya, that's her." I answered coldly, looking directly into her eyes.

"Great now that that's settled, I set the court date on..." The sheriff started, looking down at a clipboard, before I cut him off.

"Don't bother, I'm not pressing charges." I said.

"You sure kid?" He asked in a suspicious voice.

"Ya, I'm sure." I answered, walking to the door.

As I put my hand on the cold handle once more, I felt arms wrapping around me from behind.

"Thank you so much much Cyrus." Bex started before breaking down into tears.

"I didn't do it for you." I started, freeing myself from her grip. "I did it for Andi. She has more to worry about than getting your sorry ass out of jail." I finished before opening the hallway.

Stepping into the darkness that had entrenched itself into space, I felt a coolness pass over me as I continued down the long corridor, alone.
