Chapter 21
Peeta’s expression is hard to read at first, his frown lines stand out a little too much and I watch him open his mouth as if to speak, but no words seem to be coming out. I stare at Peeta expectantly and he finally breathes “wow” I wait for more response but nothing comes… “Great” I say sarcastically. “Katniss this is amazing news!” Peeta finally decides to take to it in a positive way. Thank god.
“You really think so?” I ask. “Of course! I mean it’s a little earlier and more than I could ever had wished for but if you want this, well I am so happy” Peeta says and I can honestly hear the happiness in his voice now appearing. I breathe out “I’m scared though” is all I add. “Katniss, I feel a little bad though… we should have worn protection that time… it would have been better planned but” Peeta says although I butt in not wanting to talk about it “I never wanted to have kids” I whisper, still in immense shock. “Katniss” Peeta says gently giving my shoulder a shake. “You must be thinking it too” my voice starts to raise. “When our child would be old enough their name will not so coincidently be called out of that reaping bowl… I can’t handle this” I shout flinching away from Peeta. “Snow will be taken down by then” Peeta says and actually that could be true, if the rumours are true that the uprising is nearly finished, Snow should be dead soon. District 13 have a date which they won’t make official.
“You’re right” I say gently again “but the games may not stop…” “Katniss we already know the games have stopped” Peeta reassures me. “Okay” I say. “Okay.” Well I’ve managed to ruin the moment.
“You’d make an amazing dad” I try to bring the mood back up because I feel guilty for making the good news into bad news. “Thanks, you would make an amazing mum” he says but the light has gone from his eyes. “Are you going to leave me?” I ask because I’m honestly starting to get doubts. “Katniss how many times do we talk about this? How many times do I have to tell you I’m never leaving for you to actually believe it?” he says. “You’re right. I’m sorry” I say giving him a kiss. The past is the past, I need to start thinking about the future now, the future with Peeta, with the baby to be and with no President Snow… no games.
“There is actually something I need to talk to you well ask you about” Peeta says causally after a very long pause. “Okay” I say looking around at him. Peeta rolls to my side of the bed and kneels onto the floor next to my feet. I don’t realise what he is doing till I see the shine of the beautiful engagement ring he holds out to me. My hands cover my mouth, I am so shocked. I stare into his eyes, the eyes I know I want to spend the rest of my life with. “Katniss, will you marry me?” Peeta says "and make me the happiest man alive?" a shy smile creeps onto his face.
I didn’t expect this, I thought he was going to say something about his new bakery or something but omg… “YES” I practically shout falling to the floor and crushing Peeta with a massive hug.
That really was the happiest moment of my life.
