Six years later...
I sat in Gate C, waiting on my flight from Miami. It had been six years since I had lived back home and if felt like forever. I graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Biology and went back for my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. The only thing I didn't have was a job. Dria and Chantel kept me afloat about what was going on in the city, since they both went to school in the surrounding area. Chantel was still in school to become a Pediatric Nutritionist and Dria was already a registered nurse. Chantel was still with Marcus and Casey was now six years old. He looked exactly like Marcus but a younger version. Chantel would always send me pictures of him and tell me about how smart he was in school. I was nervous about moving back because I hadn't talked to Daniel in four years. We tried making things work with the long distance relationship but after a while, things weren't the same. He had his life and I had mine. Besides, that was kiddy romance and I was twenty-four now.
I sat on the plane, thinking about the surprise Chantel said she had for me. I hope it wasn't some guy she had lined up for me because I was not trying to be tied down. I closed my eyes and relaxed in the seat.
When I arrived, I dialed Chantel. She was supposed to be waiting for me when the plane landed.
"Where are you?" I spoke into the phone while grabbing my bags.
"Outside."
I walked through the exit and noticed Chantel parked outside in a new BMW. Dria was in the passenger's seat and Meilani in the back. Everybody hopped out of the car and rushed towards me.
"Welcome home, bitch!"
I noticed Chantel waddling towards me with a huge belly.
"Surprise!" She smiled.
"When did this happen?!"
"Eight months ago!"
I hugged Chantel tightly and stepped back to look her over.
"Girl, wait until Daniel sees you!"
"Stop it, I'm not even thinking about him. That shit is old."
"Well apparently he ain't thinking about you." Meilani spoke grabbing my bags, to put them in the trunk.
"What do you mean?"
"You talk to damn much." Dria shook her head.
"No, it's okay. Girl I ain't seen that nigga in four years. You think I'ma trip over him?"
"Let's get in the car. We're holding up traffic." Chantel spoke walking away.
I followed them to the car and got inside.
"How you get this expensive ass car?"
"Marcus!" Dria cut in.
"And he pays her tuition. She must be sucking the shit outta his dick because I can't get a nigga to buy me a toothbrush." Meilani added.
"He owes me this shit! I'm having his baby!"
"That don't mean shit!"
"The hell it don't. I gotta take time out of my life to have a baby when I could be focusing on a career."
"What are you having?" I asked while leaning closer to her seat.
"A girl, Skyleigh."
Chantel had the biggest smile on her face when answering me.
"So what's up with Daniel?"
"Damn for somebody who ain't thinking about him, you sure asking a lot of questions." Chantel spoke while looking at me through the rear view mirror.
"Whatever, just start talking."
"Well, he's with somebody."
"Oh, that ain't nothing." I shrugged while reclining back in my seat. "I'm over him. I told yall I moved on but who is she?"
"Her name is Jelly."
"Jelly? What the hell?"
"She's cool Kaidyn, a real chill bitch."
"Y'all know her?"
"Daniel brought her around me and Marcus a few times."
"She can cook some good ass shrimp alfredo." Dria added.
"How does she look?"
"Damn bitch you want a back ground check!" Dria laughed.
I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms.
"Y'all bitches still immature."
"She's sexy as hell Kaidyn." Meilani spoke with lust in her voice. "But you look better than her." She clarified, when noticing my attitude.
"I'm happy for him."
"Dria did you hear about Cameron coming back to town? Oh, yo ass ain't laughing so hard now huh?" Chantel giggled.
"What you talking about, Chan?"
"Cam is coming back. Maybe to you."
Dria's face dropped.
"Chantel, you might get Kaidyn with that bullshit but I would never date Cam again!"
Chantel waved Dria off before speaking. "Kaidyn, tell us about your man in Miami."
"Who, Noah? He's still there!"
"So it's over?"
"A done deal. He's a liar!"
"What did he lie about?"
"Every damn thing! I couldn't take that shit any longer."
Noah was the guy I dated during college, I would always catch him with other girls or even having sex with other women, due to the fact that I refused to have sex with him until I was truly ready. When he found out that I planned on moving, this nigga tried to give me an engagement ring. When I declined, he called me all types of ungrateful bitches.
"Yea, and you know you had to be single for Daniel, when you came back."
"Please don't make this awkward for me. I told you that I'm over him and I don't want no shit between me and Jam."
"It's Jelly."
"Same damn thing! You spead the shit on toast!"
"Whatever, can we stop and get some food? I'm hungry now." Meilani spoke.
Chantel dropped me off at my grandmother's and told me she would call me tomorrow. I knocked at the door and it took my grandmother a while to answer it.
"Hey baby!"
"Hey, ma!" I smiled while placing my bags down to hug her.
"Welcome back, let me help you with these bags."
After I had everything situated, I talked to my grandmother for a while and went to the bedroom. When I stepped inside, so many memories came back. She had left everything the way it was and I had to laugh at the ridiculous picture of Chantel, Dria, and I, that was stuck to the mirror. It felt good to be home.
