Purdy is quiet in the car; she drives carefully, adheres to the road signs, speed limits, and her music is barely audible. I start to zone out slightly, and I stare out the window, trying to pull myself back together. I memorise landmarks that we drive by, rhyming them over and over in my head trying to reduce the fog in my head.

Behind us, an alarm sounded, and it made me flinch. I realised I was starting to feel nervous about meeting Purdy's dad and friends, which is understandable. The fog in my head began to thin; I needed to fight this stupor if I want Purdy to stay my friend.

"Steven," she quietly says as she reaches out and touches my arm gently, those little tingles return pulling my attention back to her. I stare in her direction, the scenery now forgotten as Purdy is much more beautiful to look at anyway.

"You didn't have to tell me your story Purdy, it is none of my business or the people at my parent's party. They were probably all listening to us."

"I know. But best, you knew. I'm not ashamed of who I am, we all have flaws Steven, but I wouldn't change a thing about me."

I would change everything about myself; I live day to day with this foggy brain, believing that I should have never been conceived into this world. I don't say this out loud to anyone because don't all teenagers wish they were never born, but I long to tell her maybe she could help me.

I lost track of time and the direction in which we travelled, but I had a vague idea where we were. Purdy got out of the car, and I did the same, I followed her like an obedient drone.

She stopped just outside the door of the gym and looked up at me. I looked down at her but hid behind my mop of hair. She stretched up and grabbed hold of my hair and tucked it behind my ears.

"That's better; you are so handsome, Steven. Why do you hide behind all that hair, I think I might have to cut it." She turned towards the door to push it open, just then I was fearless I grasped her hand. I was trembling, but as her eyes met mine the shaking stopped, and I asked her,

"Can I hold your hand, Purdy."

"I thought you would never ask." Smiling at me, she squeezed my hand. Purdy stood up on her tip-toes, moved closer, putting her head on my chest she wrapped her other arm around me and hugged me tightly. We stood for only moments like this, but it was beautiful, and I had a goofy grin on my face because she called me handsome.

We walk into the gym, no strike that out, she pulls a reluctant Nerd Boy by the hand into the gym. I'm nervous and the untidy mop that I call my hair covers my face, I don't push my hair back I use it to hide from the packed out boxing gym — remembering that they are all here to check out the 'Nerd Boy' that their precious Purdy is supposedly dating.

"Hi, daddy. Wow, look at the number of people here tonight. Did they all come here to check out my Nerd boy?" My grin widens, if that is even possible, at the mention of Purdy calling me her Nerd Boy.

"Well, you did dump Crusher for him." Mr Del-Ray teased, and it worked Purdy was quick with a rather high pitched answer, "No, dad, I did not."

"Well, I suppose so if you say so, honey." He continued to tease her, and now it was her time to blush, this was the first time I have ever seen her flustered and blushing. I'm crossing my fingers that she blushes when she lies, I will have to put that theory to the test, but before I could come up with my first lot of questions Mr Del-Ray holds out his hand, we shake hands.

Mr Del-Ray has a thick, gruff voice but it is also warm and inviting although I wouldn't want to cross him, he does look intimating, well let's say I'm always going to do precisely what Mr Del-Ray tells me to do, no questions asked.

"Good solid handshake there boy, you got a real name? I'm not calling you by Purdy's pet name." And the teasing continued, I glanced at Purdy and caught her raising her eyes skyward, hands on her hips and shaking her head, this must be the type of relationship they have, and I am instantly jealous. I would love to have this relationship with my father.

"Steven Chase," I answer, and I'm instantly proud of myself for not stuttering, and so far I haven't tripped over my own feet, yet.

"Well Steven my boy welcome to 'Del-Ray Boxing Club', the changing rooms are over there, here follow me." He strides away, and I quickly follow. "Here you go, son; we will wait out here, you know keep guard."

Now I was confused, "keep guard Sir? From what?" I asked, knowing my face was scrunched up in confusion.

Mr Del-Ray laughed loudly; I could tell he was a happy man who genuinely enjoyed the company of others. Crossing my fingers, I hoped I would get many more chances to be in his company if I am honest he made the foggy obedient drone that is apart of me disappear, but only temporarily. I knew it would be back and it scared me.
