"Maybe she forgot, or is running late," Darnell said, we are not used to depending on anyone but ourselves so really we can't be sure if she is always late, or it's no big deal to her if you don't show up.
I shrug my shoulders. "Purdy said she had loads of artwork to hand in today and could do with help carrying it."
Darnell sighs and juts out his bottom lip.
We sat on the wall in silence, and I looked at the message she wrote on my hand. I didn't forget, did she?
The bell sounded and followed by a longer bell which signified there was an emergency assembly meeting, and it started in five minutes.
Darnell and I stood up as if a switch had been flicked on. And as if on auto-pilot we both head in that direction.
'We will find Purdy later and apologise for standing her up." Darnell says anxious to get to the assembly.
All students must attend these, and it's Principle Waters number one rule here at MoreTime College. Punishments are adapted to suit the students. Darnell decided to forgo it one day, and his sentence was to help the gym teacher for an entire month.
We walked into the school and headed towards the assembly hall. "You know if you cross your arms and flex anymore, you are going to tear that t-shirt of yours."
"Oh, shut-up Darnell, I'm not that big." I frown down at him.
"Yes, you are, look around you, Steven. You're a walking menace; you scowl at everyone. You've been mine and Ed's bodyguard for the last few years; nobody messes with us since you tried to put a guy through a wall a few years ago for taking Ed's lunch and throwing it across the canteen. You were awesome. But that's not why we are friends; you understand that, right?"
I roll my eyes at him. "Yes I love you too man, seriously I pushed a guy into a wall, did I hurt him badly?"
"Yes, he died. That's why everyone is scared of you." Darnell looked up at me with a deadpan stare.
"What the what man, I killed someone, why don't I remember." My panic level was escalating when I now noticed Darnell bent over laughing. "You're an ass Darnell, I can't distinguish between real and make-believe, and you are teasing me about killing a guy."
"You are going to be so easy to wind-up. Of course, you didn't kill the guy. Just broke about every bone in his body and he transferred out of here. Now the girls that's a different story they do love the ultimate bad boy."
I raised eyes skyward and shook my head.
"Ok, he said. Lift your head slightly and look over at those girls over there."
Three girls were rushing to finish getting their book bag ready, and they all looked up at the same time; smiled, waved and in there most girlie noises I assume they synchronise their 'hi Steven'.
I give them a single head nod. They swooned. Have the females all gone mad, or am I in an alternate dimension.
"Did you see that he saw us? What til we tell Francesca see is going to be pissed. She has fancied him for ages now." One of the girls whispered.
"Well, she's a bit late, I think purdy snagged him the other day." Their whispering continued as we moved away.
As I looked around, I saw males stand as far as me as possible, and females give me little waves. I roll my eyes, dear God, what the hell is going on. Small bubbles of confusion rose to the surface, and I start to feel tendrils of anger creep slowly up my body. I have never been this aware of the world around me, admittingly I am scared.
