Matthew has a secret. The real reason he keeps so close with Kumajiro is because Kumajiro has Alzheimer's. That is why Kumajiro can't remember Canada, but has a strong enough bond with him. The two have been best friends for a long time so Matthew takes care of Kumajiro not caring if he remembers him or not. Even if Kumajiro couldn't see him, Matthew would stay with him.

This was just thought of on the fly. It's not accurate because I don't think bears can have Alzheimer's... I guess not. It's just sad to think about.
