The Pain ch.32

Veronica

These past days with Lucas have made me truly happier. After everything I lost, I feel like this is god telling me that everything is all good now. But just watch, someday everything will disappear. I hear the door to my house open. I know that it's Lucas. Why did I give him those keys?

"Where are you?"

"Bedroom." I yell as I zip up my backpack.

He stands leaned against the door frame just starring at me. His mouth is slightly open.

"What?" I say as I stand up.

"You look beautiful."

"Thanks." Today I decided to step out of my comfort zone and wear a floral dress. My golden brown hair I didn't do anything with because well, it curls by itself, plus I'm lazy. I paired the dress with my black converse.

I grab all my stuff I need for school and we head out the door. His hand eventually finds mine while we are walking to his car.

A little while into the car ride, Lucas looks like he is trying to tell me something.

"Lucas what's wrong?" I say turning to face him more as he drives.

"The night I came home from our date V, my mom was gone. I couldn't find her anywhere. I didn't want to call you because I figured you were sleeping. But after a while I found a note from her, saying that she's turning her life around. That she wasn't to be my mom and be there for me. She said that she has a job and that she was working last night. And she said that she was super worried when I didn't come home at all for 3 days but she said that she knew I would stay safe."

This information took me by surprise. "Did she come home?"

"Yes. Yes she did and she apologized for everything and said how sorry she was. I even asked how she knew I had a girlfriend and she said she came in my room at night and heard me say 'girlfriend' or something."

"That's great right?" I say smiling at him.

"Yes yes it is." He says smiling.

We pull up to school and we walk in holding hands. Lucas is actually pretty popular. Yes he has friends but he doesn't really trust them. But as we were passing the bathrooms, I heard crying. What happened now runs through my head. The crying was coming from the girls bathroom, so I told Lucas to go without me while I went to talk to who ever was crying in the bathroom.

The second stall is where the crying is from. "Hello?" I say but there is no response. "Umm I was just wondering what's wrong, maybe I can help."
That did the trick. The stall opened slowly. A girl with long black hair comes out. I've never seen her before. Her eyes are red from crying so much.

"Are you new?" She nods her head slowly. "Why are you crying?"

"Some- some boy told me that I shouldn't be at this school and that I should go because I'm ugly." My heart broke for this girl and I don't even know who she is.

"Who said that?"

"I don't know who he was."

"Well don't listen to them. Some boys at this school are jerks. But if you want you can sit with me and Lucas at lunch." I said smiling at her.

"Who's Lucas?" She said as I started walking towards the exit walking backwards.

"My boyfriend. Oh and what's your name?" I said.

"Ava. Yours?"

"Veronica. Nice to meet you Ava." I say to her extending my hand to her smiling. She shakes my hand.

"Nice to meet you to." She says shyly.

"Well maybe I'll see you in my classes ." I say smiling at her while walking out of the bathroom to go to class.
