It's been a month since I was hired to be Ruff's intern. Everything was going smoothly so far. Most of the time, I would organize files in a drawer he assigns for that day. When an episode was being aired, I would be helping with technical equipment with his cousin, Murray. Murray is the camera operator for the show and he would usually teach me a bit about how to use the equipment correctly. Every once in a while, Hazel would come and help me out. Throughout that first month of working with him, Ruff was overall nice. He wasn't very strict; he usually gave me an hour break every day. I did get a chance to know him personally. He wasn't a jerk like Hazel said about other celebrities. I even got to know Blossom a bit more. I could tell right away that she was pretty serious throughout most of the time, just like on TV. However, I did enjoy her company. The only time I didn't go to work is if I had a family emergency or anything family related. I would either call Ruff or his boss Henry to inform them about the change of plans. They were understandably about the situation and I would be excused for that day. For example, Kyle's birthday was on July tenth, so I had to stay home to be there for him. That was over a week ago and was the only day I didn't go to work.
I managed to keep my internship a secret from Kyle and Aunt Cynthia. Kyle has noticed that I usually left the house often, that even left the house at all. They would usually ask where I went every single day. I have made up an excuse to leave the house. I told them that I found a few "band friends" who lived two blocks from my house. I added on that they're from my new school and I was hanging out with them because I enjoyed their company. It took them a while, but they did believe me. They did assign a curfew, however. Every day, I had to be back by nine pm. I did inform Ruff about this and I was usually allowed to leave at eight since it takes me around forty-five minutes to walk home. I could take the subway to work, but I don't have a map or a list of subways I can take every day to get there.
On one sunny day, Hazel and I went to Ruff's doghouse as usual. The sun was bright, ice cream shops had long lines, many places had the AC on, and many people were buying sunscreen. As soon as we got there, Ruff gave us the files he wants us to organize for the day.
"What drawer do you want us to place these files in, Mr. Ruffman?" I asked.
"Just keep them in the top drawer for now," he replied.
We proceeded to organize everything the way he asked us to. Blossom was seen typing on her laptop and Ruff was reading some newspapers from this morning. A minute later, I noticed he had this slight fear on his face. Something's not right, I thought.
"Oh, no!" he cried.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing," he responded, dropping the newspapers.
"Are you sure? You seem a bit stressed out." Hazel said.
"I don't know if I should tell you guys," he replied.
"Is it something family related? We'll understand if it is." I replied.
"It is, I thought it would never happen," he said.
"What is it?" I asked.
"According to this morning's newspaper, Scruff Ruffman escaped from a maximum security pound yesterday. He's also my identical twin brother," he explained.
"Twin brother?" I questioned.
"What happened to him?" I asked.
"He was supposed to serve time in a maximum security pound, instead he escaped," he explained.
"Why is he in jail in the first place?" I asked.
"Because he's a criminal mastermind," he responded.
