"Hey, Ruby. Do you really think that Ruff is serious about this?" Hazel asked.
"About what?" I questioned.
"About finding a new assistant?" she replied.
"Well, I hope he isn't. Who can replace Blossom? Even if he is, it's gonna be hard to find someone as hard-working as her," I responded.
It was towards the end of October on a Sunday. Halloween was on that Saturday. Hazel and I were on a subway, going to Ruff's house. The beginning of season three was starting tomorrow at five o'clock. We still haven't heard from Blossom since. Ruff assumed that she probably wasn't coming back, so he wanted to hire a new assistant. I thought he was just joking about it. There was no way he would actually replace her. However, we did get to hear an update from the police. Apparently, they finally caught Scruff. They sent him back to Poodle Island, where he should be. I'm glad that we don't have to worry about him anymore. Anyway, as soon as we arrived, we saw a lot of flyers all over the backyard and porch. We entered and Ruff was talking to someone. It was a small brown mouse.
"Ruff, who is this?" Hazel asked.
"Oh, guys. This is Chet. He's gonna be working for us now. Be nice to him," Ruff replied.
"Hi, Chet," I said.
"Chet, this is Ruby and Hazel. They work for me, too. Now, get comfortable here. This is where you'll live. I build a house for you," Ruff replied.
Chet had a bunch of old bags with him. He was a small dark brown mouse with large ears. He has short whiskers that reminded me of Blossom. His tail was rather long and thin. He also had a large, light brown spot on his belly. Instead of going into the house that Ruff made for him, he moves inside a small hole in the Fetch 3000.
"What's Chet doing?" I asked.
"No, wait, I never said..." Ruff said before Chet moved his bags inside the Fetch 3000.
"I guess he lives there now," I replied.
"Okay, since Chet now works here, you guys are gonna have to get used to him," Ruff sighed.
We had to mind our own business while we cleaned the house. I did have a suspicious feeling about Chet. Why would Ruff hire him that easily? Why did Chet choose to work here? I didn't dislike him automatically. You can't hate someone if you don't know them. Well, I did want to at least get to know him. While I was cleaning the floor, I tried to talk to Chet. Everyone else was doing their own thing. Meanwhile, I put the mop down, kneeled down on the floor and started knocking on his "door".
"Chet? Chet? Are you there? I just want to talk," I startled.
He came out of the Fetch 3000. I tried to get his attention, but he went straight to the fridge. I decided to have a peek at his new home. I noticed a few details that caught my attention. There wasn't much in there. In fact, the bags he carried didn't have anything in them. The only thing in there was the bed that was already provided for him from the homemade house. I knew something was up.
Chet came back with a few leftover Chinese boxes from the fridge. He didn't look happy to see someone he just met was looking through his home. I immediately apologized, but I knew I needed answers for this.
"Chet, I know we just met and everything, but do you have anything with you from your old home?"
He shook his head, responding no. I also asked him why he decided to take the job to work for Ruff. Apparently, he wanted this job so he wouldn't have to live on the streets. It was the only job he was able to find that offered a home for him. So, when Ruff announced that he needed a new assistant, he was the first to call. I felt bad for him.
"Chet, I completely understand now. You didn't want to live out there, didn't you?" I sighed.
He shook his head. It broke my heart hearing about his life before he came here. I wanted Blossom back, but I also didn't want Chet to be homeless again. I didn't know if Ruff knew about this. Should I tell him? A few minutes later, I heard a knock on the door. Ruff went to open it. To our surprise, it was Blossom with her luggage.
"Blossom, what are you doing here?" Ruff asked.
"Are you coming back?" Hazel asked.
Blossom shook her head. She came in with her belongings. Her old desk was still there as she left it. Chet came to us to see what was going on. Blossom was shocked when she saw a mouse; she did realize what was going on. She angrily grabbed her bags and was heading out the door.
"Wait, this isn't what it looks like," Ruff said.
"Blossom, please stay," I begged.
"If you stay, I'll kick out Chet for you. Does that sound like a deal?" Ruff replied.
"Wait, Ruff, you can't kick out Chet," I stood up.
"Why not?" he asked.
"Well, because... He's a mouse. It's too dangerous for him," I replied.
"What about Blossom?" Hazel asked.
"Blossom, we care about you, too. Please, stay here. This is your home," I said.
"So, who's staying?" Ruff asked.
"Both?" I responded.
"Both?! Are you sure this is a good idea?" he asked.
"Yeah, that way, everyone's happy. Chet will have a place to stay, Blossom wouldn't have to find a new job and you get more help for the price of one, Ruff," I explained.
"But I'm still in charge here, so I make the decision," Ruff claimed.
"So, what would it be?" Hazel asked.
"We'll go with your idea," he sighed.
"So, they can both stay?" I asked.
"Yeah, but you all have to get along," he said.
I was happy about that. We weren't going to lose anybody and we found a compromise that everyone agreed. I was worried that Chet was going to lose his home he just got. Even if he did, I would gladly offer him to live in my room. I just had to be careful because Kyle would probably not let me have a mouse living with us. Aunt Cynthia has a fear of mice, so there's another reason.
A few hours later, we were continuing our jobs. Blossom was at her desk, Hazel and I were cleaning, Ruff was running errands and Chet was at his new home. While I was cleaning the Fetch 3000, I noticed something coming out of Chet's mouse hole. It was a piece of cheese with a note attached to it. I picked it up and pulled the note out. I flipped it around and it was a thank you note from Chet. He gave me some cheese for saving him from being homeless again. I knew he had a good heart. This was the beginning of a new friendship.
