"Hey, Ruby, are you coming to the party tonight?" my friend Athena asked me.
"Oh, uh, of course, I'm coming to the party. I can't wait to dance with you. Also, hang out with everyone," I nervously chucked.
"Okay, I guess I'll see you there," she responded.
"Bye," I replied in embarrassment.
The school bell just rang for us to go home. The day before Halloween, the school was hosting a Halloween party. Everyone was invited and we needed two dollars to go. We were allowed to dress in our costumes, so I decided to go home and get changed.
As soon as I got home, I got dressed in my costume. I was an archeress. Hazel was coming along with me. She used an old white rag as her ghost costume. I had my two dollars to pay at the front door to enter. We did decide to wait at home until the party started. I was really excited to go because Kyle and Aunt Cynthia is going to let us go. Dad almost never allowed me to go to any parties. I wanted to have fun with my friends and maybe I can be a bit more confident around Athena. Ruff was already aware of the party, but he was going to let me have fun.
When it was seven o'clock, Hazel and I made our way there. We were expected to be home by ten o'clock, the time when the party ends. We arrived there five minutes later and I handed my two dollars to the administrator standing at this front door who was collecting the money. The party was in the gym, so that's where we went.
As soon as I step foot into the gym, I saw all of the lights, food, beverages, and students there. I was looking for my friends when I hear them from a distance. I walked to them. Their names were Joe, Evan, Drake, Alex, Cornelius, and Athena.
"Hey, guys," I said.
"What's up?" Cornelius replied.
"Ruby, I like your costume," Athena complimented.
"Oh, thanks. You look very lovely," I stuttered. I started blushing.
"Nice parrot, by the way," Joe said.
"Oh, guys, this is Hazel. She's a close friend of mine," I introduced.
"You're friends with a parakeet?" Cornelius asked.
"Actually, I'm a cockatiel. Thank you very much," Hazel sassed.
We spent most of the time having fun. We hung out with each other everywhere we went. Hazel got to know the people I'm with while in school and I started to feel more comfortable around a social event. I can be introverted, but I can also be extroverted around my friends. Sometimes, I can be socially awkward with people I don't know. I even felt more confident talking to Athena without having the feeling of butterflies in my stomach.
Two hours later, it was nine o'clock. We still had an hour of party time before it ended. Someone accidentally spilled soda all over Hazel, so she wanted to go to the bathroom. I decided to take her there. We got there and I helped her clean herself up. I used the water from the sink and the soap from the dispenser to help her get the soda out. I placed her under the hand dryer and turned it on. I wasn't able to dry her out completely, but she was mostly dry.
We were about to go back to the gym when I noticed something. Down one of the hallways, I saw two shadows. They looked very familiar. We were told that we weren't allowed to wander around the school. The only places we were allowed to go was the gym and the hallway that leads to the bathroom. If we were caught somewhere else, we got detention. I decided to go and investigate, but Hazel said it was a bad idea. I didn't listen. She went with me.
We followed the shadows down the hallway. I started to observe them, trying to figure out who they might be. I was able to see one of them by their body type. They had a pear-shaped body, similar to Ruff. The other one had a slightly slimmer body shape. I did suspect them. I believed it was Scruff and Ruff's arch enemy, Spot Spotnik. Even though I've never met him personally, Ruff told me all about him. Just like Ruff, he's a dog. He has pranked Ruff before. I've witnessed it. Why were they in school? I thought Scruff was back on Poodle Island. Are they planning something together? I decided to call Ruff to tell him what was going on.
"Ruff, it's Ruby," I whispered.
"Ruby, are still at the party?" he asked.
"Yeah, but there's a situation going on," I replied.
"What's going on?" he questioned.
"I'm with Hazel right now down a hallway. By the distance, I think I see Scruff and Spotnik," I whispered.
"Are you sure it's them?" he asked.
"I'm maybe fifty percent sure. I really can't see their faces," I replied.
"Okay, don't hang up," he said.
They reacted to my voice. We freaked out, but we didn't move. The two of them came towards us with a flashlight turned on. One of them shined it to us. We were shocked to be seen. However, we still couldn't see their faces.
"Hey, Hazel, we should maybe run for our lives now, huh?" I nervously said.
We ran to the other side if the hallway. I didn't look back to see if they were chasing us. I heard a bunch of times to never look back when your being chased. Surprising enough, there weren't any administrators around to see us running around the school. We were tired of running at some point, so we decided to stop to rest in the cafeteria. All of the tables were wiped down and the floor was clean.
By the distance, we saw them again. They were following us the entire time. I was too tired to run anymore, so I gave up trying to escape.
"Okay, you caught us," I said.
"We won't run anymore," Hazel replied as they got closer to us.
"Look, Scruff, I promise not to tell the police. I'm sorry for everything I did, so don't hurt us," I begged.
"Who's Scruff?" one of them asked.
"Huh?" I replied.
They shined the flashlight to their faces. It wasn't them. They were just two students whose disguises look like the bad guys. In fact, only the shale of their costumes matched. They were both humans. I've never talked to them. I've seen them around during lunch. I felt embarrassed.
"Yikes," Hazel said.
"Oh, guys, I'm so sorry about this. What are you guys doing in the hallways, anyway?" I asked.
"What are you doing out here?" one of them asked.
"We saw you guys out here and figured you were... Someone else," I replied.
"We're just out here to plan a prank, so go back to the gym and don't blow our cover," he replied.
We ran quickly back to the gym without anyone noticing. The friend group was worried about us since we were gone for a while. We came back completely sweaty. Joe asked us where have we been and what happened. I lied to him and said we thought we saw a ghost. Alex offered us some water. Everyone was a bit worried except Evan. He didn't seem to care about us that much and didn't get involved.
I realized that I never hung up to the call and told Ruff that it was a false alarm. He was relieved that Scruff and Spotnik weren't working together after all. I wanted to go home after that, so we left with only ten minutes left of the party. We got home five minutes before the curfew and I didn't want to interact with anyone until I got some sleep. I just hoped those guys weren't going to make fun of me when it was Monday...
