It was only nine in the morning. Kyle, Hazel and I were in the car; we were going to pick up the Ruff and the others for that morning. I had a massive headache from the night before. After all of that, I was exhausted and anxious. We all got up really early to prepare for court. I wasn't sure if we were able to prove Grandma's innocence even after gathering all of the evidence.
Kyle drove by the doghouse and honked. A few seconds later, they came out of the house and got in the car. We were all wearing formal clothing. My brother immediately drove us to a building close to the police station; that's where the jury was going to be held. Shortly after arriving, there were many cars parked by the entrance. Kyle was able to find a parking spot, however. We all got out of the car and we made our way inside. We immediately signed in and we had to stay in the waiting room until it was time for court.
"Now, remember, the Offense Team may be against us, but we still have to respect them. Don't insult them or say anything bad about them," Kyle told me.
At ten o'clock, we were called down to start the trial. We all went together in a room filled with many people. Bonnie and Clyde were at the front of the room. To the right of the courtroom, I noticed a group of five middle-aged dogs. Kyle led us to them and we shook hands with them. We then sat by Bonnie and Clyde. Then, I noticed another dog dressed in a prison uniform being led by police officers. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was Grandma Ruffman. She was seated right next to the judge's seat. Lastly, an older-looking woman wearing a black robe sat on the judge's seat.
"Good morning, everyone. My name is Judge Hannah. Thank you all for coming. We're gathered here to discuss the case of Scruff Ruffman's escape and to finally prove whether Mrs. Ruffman is the reason for this sudden event." Judge Hannah pointed at us. "May the Defense Team introduce themselves."
Kyle stood up and said, "My name is Kyle Light. I am the lawyer of the Defense and my group and I will prove today that Marilynn Ruffman is innocent."
"My name is Ruby Light, sister of Kyle Light. I'm an assistant and I have gathered evidence to show to you today."
"My name is Bonnie Magma. My cousin Clyde and I work together in the police laboratory for these types of purposes. Today, we decided to take this case."
Everyone in our team got a chance to introduce themselves. I knew that we had to avoid using slang words and phrases. We wanted to look professional in front of everyone.
"Now, may the Offense Team introduce themselves."
One stood up and said, "My name is Bob Park and I'm a lawyer. My team and I have gathered our own evidence to prove that Marilynn Ruffman did, in fact, free Scruff Ruffman from prison."
Now, everyone on their team introduced themselves. I decided to now show any facial expression while they were meeting the judge. It was hard to think that they could be the reason why Grandma Ruffman would stay in jail.
"Now, let's get started. According to this file, on May 22 at 8:56 pm, Scruff Ruffman escaped Poodle Island. Apparently, Marilynn Ruffman has been accused of breaking a criminal out of a maximum security prison for dogs. Does the Offense Team have any questions for Mrs. Ruffman? If so, only one person may ask these questions," Judge Hannah replied.
"Ruby, you should go up there," Ruff whispered into my ear.
"Why can't you go up there? She's your grandmother," I whispered back.
"Ruby, you better go up there."
"Okay," I sighed.
"Please step right up, Ms. Light," Judge Hannah said.
