The alarm rang on a cold Monday morning. I immediately got up. Today is special, I thought. It was that time of the year again when hearts were everywhere, couples celebrated their love for each other and people confessing to their crushes. I had to go to school, so I had my chance to shine. I got up to get dressed. I was really planning on giving a special holiday gift to Athena. The day before, I got everything set up. I had a gift bag with a small cake and a teddy bear with heart-shaped balloons tied to the handles. I bought the supplies the day before for Athena. I wanted to confess to her, but I don't have the courage. Instead, I decided to give her a gift. However, I didn't want her to know it came from me, so I didn't write my name on it. I carefully placed the gift inside my backpack with the balloons sticking out.

"Are you sure she's going to like it?" Hazel asked.

"Of course she is. Her favorite flavor is chocolate, so I asked the baker to have chocolate on the inside," I replied.

"You know, if you like her, you can always just talk to her," she insisted.

"And get all awkward and I'll just embarrass myself in front of her? Yeah, no thanks," I uttered.

"But she's part of your friend group," she said.

"I knew that. It just I get nervous when she's around," I replied.

"How are you going to give it to her without her knowing?" she asked.

"I got a plan figured out," I replied. "Anyway, I gotta go now. I'll see you later. Bye!"

I went outside and was blasted by the cold windy weather. There was still a lot of snow everywhere. The roads were slippery and the sidewalks were still covered in snow. Kyle was outside trying to shovel snow out of the porch. He was wearing a big heavy coat, pants, snow boots and gloves.

"Hey, Ruby, can you give me a hand here before you go to school? There's another shovel by the door," he replied.

"Sure." I retrieved the other shovel and started helping him get all of the show out of the way.

"Valentine's Day, huh?" Kyle smirked.

"Yeah, it's today," I replied.

"I hate Valentine's Day," he replied.

"Why?" I asked.

"Well, not everyone has someone to admire this day with. Maybe they're just lonely and can only celebrate it by themselves," he responded. "Who are you going to give that cake to anyway?"

"Well, a friend," I replied.

"What kind of friend?" he asked.

"Just a friend," I responded.

"Do you like them?" he asked.

"Well, I would say I 'like' them. More like have an interest in being more than just friends," I replied.

"That's exactly what that..." he replied.

"I gotta go now, Kyle. See you later! Bye!" I interrupted.

I dropped the shovel on the concrete and ran off. I was trying to make my way to school before 8:25. School started at 8:30 and I wanted to get there at 8:15 to deliver the present. It was 7:50 when I left the house. I didn't really need a bus to get to school since we lived so close there. However, the snow and ice did slow me down a bit. Usually, it took me ten minutes to get to school. However, today it took me fifteen minutes to get there. I entered the school building at 8:07.

The first thing I did was sneak around the hallways to find Athena's first-period class, science. She and I had the same teacher but we were in different classes. The friend group was waiting for me in the library, so I had to be quick. There were administrators blocking the hallways and the only places students were allowed to be in is the library, the cafeteria, and the fine arts hallway. The only thing that allowed students to be in the other hallways were tutoring passes. I had my pass ready to be shown to them, so they looked at my pass and they let me through.
