David had just come from a case and was looking for his adopted daughter, Klaire. He adopted her when her parents were killed by George Foyet. Ever since then she's been just as much family as the other BAU kids. "Klaire? I'm home." He heard the pound of her feet and she tackled him. "Why are you crying Bella?" "Carolyn called and she wants to see us." Klaire groaned. "Okay, let's go then." She jumped down and they got in the car. "Your tenth birthday is coming up. What would you like to do for it?" David just wanted to break the tension. "Small party. BAU family and uncle Jason." "Okay." They walked up to her hotel room and knocked on the door. Carolyn let them in and Klaire knew something was wrong. Her dad seemed oblivious to it. Klaire had missed the first part if the conversation, but her father had his phone out. "No David. Its too late. I can feel them working." Carolyn slurred. "I have to try. Please." "No no. Just hold me please." She patted the bed and David acknowledged her wish. He held her in his arms, with Klaire latched onto his leg. They were both in tears. "Do you think he'll be there?" Carolyn asked. "I'm sure he will." Dave replied. "I know he will. He'll be there for you miss Carolyn." Klaire smiled as the tears streamed down her face. "Please take care of David for me. He'll need you." "I will. I promise I will." Klaire could keep this promise unlike the countless other ones she had broke. Carolyn had stopped breathing and was dead. David took out his phone and called the corner. The whole process went by in a blur. The next thing Klaire knew, they were in the car going home. When they got in the house, Rossi pulled her into his lap. "Are you okay Bella?" "Yes, are you okay papà?" "No, but I will be." "Who is going to be waiting for Ms. Carolyn?" "Our son James. He died shortly after he was born. It had a hand in why we got divorced." "That's not fair daddy. First you lost your son and now Ms. Carolyn! That's not fair at all." "I know Bella, but sometimes life isn't fair so we have to take the bad with the good. Like bad thing James died. Good thing I didn't fail him as a father. Bad thing Ms. Carolyn dying. Good thing she's not suffering anymore. Bad thing both your parents died. Good thing I got to adopt you." The pair went silent as Klaire was grasping what Dave was saying. "Daddy, do you want to know something?" "Of course." "I'm glad you adopted me." "I am too Bella." "I love you daddy." "I love you too. Come on let's go watch some TV so you can get some sleep." David carried Klaire up the stairs and tucked her into his bed. He flipped on the flat screen and found cartoons. After about three hours of watching the same cartoon, Klaire was sleeping. Rossi filled over and closed his eyes. Sleep was welcomed in that house and it was an enjoyed sleep.
