"Girls! Get down here, now!" called out my mom from downstairs.
I rushed out of my room at the same time that my twin, Lizzie did.
"Where's Riley?" I asked her as we stepped downstairs in synch.
"How would I know?" she scoffed, and I rolled my eyes.
Riley was our younger sister, who was only 13 and was known for trouble.
Lizzie and I were 16.
"Yeah mom?" we said exactly at the same time, which usually happened a lot.
"Why aren't you girls packing?" she cried out and I noticed that she looked flushed.
"Mom, calm down. We have 2 entire weeks to go before we move. There's plenty of time." I soothed her as I gently put my hand on her back.
Lizzie groaned. "Ugh, barf." she said and put her hands on her hip.
I ignored her.
Yeah, she was a brat. A huge one.
Even though we were twins and only 3 minutes apart, I was older and felt like someone needed to be the responsible one.
Aside from Riley and the drama she brings to the family, there was always extra added by Lizzie.
All three of us were similar in different ways. Lizzie and I were blonde, with long hair, green eyes, and tiny dimples in our right cheeks. Only, I kept my hair straight and simple, and Lizzie kept hers in different styles like the princess she was.
Riley had blonde hair and blue eyes, from my dad and unlike us, she didn't have a dimple.
Jennifer Hayden Nichols, yes that was my real name. But everyone calls me Jenny.
Elizabeth Haley Nichols was Lizzie's, but we never were called by our full names unless we were in trouble.
My dad had currently got laid off from his job, and my mom insisted on moving so that he could find a new job and so that she could start working, since she was a stay-at-home mom.
I was broken away from my thoughts by the sound of a loud crash coming from upstairs.
All three of us looked up towards the staircase with wide eyes.
My mom rubbed her fingers against her temples.
"Riley Haven Nichols!" she screamed as she got up and made her way to the end of the staircase, where she stood.
My sister appeared at the top of the staircase with a huge smirk on her face.
I shook my head in disbelief.
My sisters knew how stressed mom was with all that was happening and they continued to add extra unnecessary crap that made absolutely no sense.
"What mom?" she answered in a bored tone, rolling her eyes.
"What was that noise?" my mom asked her with one hand on her hip.
"It was just Lizzie's ballet trophies." she mumbled under her breath.
"What!" Lizzie squealed and rushed to the top of the stairway to meet Riley.
My mom sighed.
"Riley, why were you in your sister's room?" she asked tiredly.
Her question was ignored by the sound of my sisters bickering.
Lizzie ran to her room and slammed the door, and Riley did the same.
My mom turned around to face me.
"Jenny, could you please help me prepare for dinner?" she asked me as she made her way over to me.
"Of course, mom."
"That's my girl." she smiled at me as we made our way to the kitchen.
******
That night, as I was brushing my teeth I heard voices coming from inside Riley's room.
At first, I thought that she was on her cell phone but when someone squealed, I immediately recognized the voice as Lizzie's.
I slowly crept up to the door.
I knew it was wrong to spy, but my curiosity got the best of me.
I mean, these two were always arguing, so what could they be talking about?
I stopped just outside of the door when I heard Riley speak.
"And she always gets treated the best no matter what."
"Yeah!" Lizzie squealed. "Like the day her gymnastics tournament and my ballet recital were on the same day, mom and dad went to hers instead of mines."
So they were talking about me.
"Yeah." said Riley. "And she's always kissing up to mom. It makes me sick."
"Tell me about it. Try being her twin. Sometimes, I wish we weren't twins. " said Lizzie.
"I don't see how you do it." Riley responded.
That was all I needed to hear.
Is this the way they really felt about me?
I went to my room and slammed the door.
A few moments later, I heard someone come into my room.
"Jenny?" said a voice that I recognized as Lizzie's.
I didn't respond.
"Je-" she started again.
"You know Lizzie, if I had the choice, you and I would not be twins." I told her.
"Jenny I didn't mean-"
"Get out of my room Elizabeth."
With that she stomped out of the room and slammed the door.
No more Mrs. Nice girl.
Things were going to be different around here.
