"You're on, Y/N," the DJ said to you as you stood there, clutching the mic, hand shaking. The lights were scorching on your face. You felt beads of sweat spring up across your brow. You ran some fingers through your hair and cleared your throat.

You recognized the song immediately - INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart." It was slow and sad and hit a little too close to home for you at the moment.

You didn't need the monitor. You already knew this one by heart. You started singing, staring at the floor, you voice wavering and barely audible.

🎶Don't ask me what you know is true
Don't have to tell you, I love your precious heart🎶

You looked up and your eyes fell on Tom, standing in the back of the crowd, watching you struggle through the song. Time seemed to slow down and everyone else just disappeared, leaving the two of you to gaze at each other.

🎶I, I was standing, you were there
Two worlds collided and they could never tear us apart🎶

His eyes seemed to say a thousand things to you: Everything's going to be okay. Don't worry. We've got this. I love you.

But even if the words were spoken, you wouldn't hear them over the thundering of your heart. It was all so upsetting. How could he be leaving in two days? How could he have not told you? How are you supposed to do this without him?

The song continued and time sped up, and the crowd came into focus. Tom's eyes held yours as he tried to make his way towards you. You put the mic to your lips and tried to sing the next verse, but you choked and dropped the mic to the floor, before rushing off stage.

You ran right into Harrison who caught you by the arms and held you there.

"Y/N, calm down-"

"Get the fuck off of me!" you pushed him away and weaved through the partygoers, wiping the tears from you cheeks, and catching sympathetic glances as you passed. Awesome, you thought, way to make a scene in front of everyone. There goes Tom's girlfriend, they're thinking, the basket case.

Harry was by the door, like he was ready to stop you. You grabbed his glass out of his hand and pushed passed him, out the door and through the restaurant, emptying his glass as you went.

Finally, the cool night air greeted you just outside the front door. You welcomed it, taking a deep breath before breaking down into sobs. You covered your face with your palms and tried to compose yourself, but it was no use. Everything was coming up to the surface. All the brave faces, all the "I'm fines", the denials and delusions crumbled to pieces...and so did you.

Tom bolted through the door and threw his arms around you.

"Babe, what's -"

"Don't!" you shouted at him, breaking from his embrace. You didn't want him to see you like this. All this time, you kept saying your were fine but you weren't. Not at all. Not even close. You were unraveling and your stubbornness and pride made it too much to bear.

You ran over to the side of the building, crouching down against the brick and pulling your knees to your chin. Get a hold of yourself, Y/N, you're overreacting. But you were drunk and tired. So tired. Tired of justifying your emotions, tired of fearing those emotions, tired of fighting off those emotions. You gave in and let them overcome you.

Someone came around the corner, covering you in their a shadow. You didn't want to be found, not like this. You wanted to sit here and cry until there was nothing left, cry until this feeling was gone.

"Please leave me alone, Tom," you sobbed, your head buried in your arms.

"Oh, sweetheart, I know exactly how you feel," Nikki said, tenderly stroking your hair, "I'm going to miss him too."
