Later, Tom went home to grab Tessa so the three of you could enjoy a nice, leisurely stroll in Richmond Park. Tessa was not having it, though. She pretty much walked Tom, dragging him along and circling his feet until he almost tripped and ate shit.
"Dammit..." he muttered and unfastened the leash so she could traipse around on her own. She gladly did, taking off to bark at birds and bother the squirrels.
"She's hoping if she wounds you, you won't leave," you chuckled, watching her play.
He put his hands in his pockets and smiled.
"Yeah, I don't know who I'm going to miss more," he said, eyeing you for a reaction.
You pursed your lips. Cute.
But you didn't have some snazzy retort. Your comeback coffer was depleted. Every hour that passed was another hour closer to him leaving. And even though that notion was a dull hum in the back of your head this morning, it grew louder and louder as the day went on. Tom's leaving in 27 hours, 25, 22...counting down like some doomsday clock. Right now, it was nearly deafening.
"Hey..." he said, grabbing your hand. You snapped out of your thoughts and glanced over at him, blinking.
"Where'd you go?" he asked, his brow wrinkled with worry.
"Sorry," you said, looking down and holding his hand tighter.
"I was just thinking about that day we met here. When you purposely threw Tessa's ball at me so you'd have an excuse to talk to me," you teased.
"That's not what happened," he laughed, "although I'm glad it did."
"It's so strange though, right?" you asked, turning to look at him, "being in the right place at the right time? I mean, there's so many things that could have happened to change that. It could have rained and we wouldn't have come here. Or you and the boys could have picked another place to have drinks..."
"Or you could never have moved here," Tom added quietly.
"It's crazy...," you said shaking your head.
"It's fate," he said, nodding his head.
You put your arm around his waist and leaned your head on his shoulder.
"I love you," you sighed.
"You're going to REALLY love this," he grinned at you, taking your hand to lead you away.
"Tessa!" he shouted over his shoulder and she bolted over to the two of you.
"What are you doing...?" you asked suspiciously.
Tom led you across the grass, looking back to give you a wink. What was he up to? If he thinks I'm going to fuck him behind some bush...
Then he stopped and you looked past him and something looked familiar. Of course! The tree. That tree that you stopped to rest on that day when the world seemed to just close in on you. That tree that Tessa scampered over to, and onto your lap, when Tom (purposely?) tossed her ball. That tree that now had a blanket, picnic basket, and bouquet of pink peonies seated beautifully under it. Romantic Tom was back.
"Oh, Tom," you said softly, smiling, "how did you do this? I've been with you all day?"
"How I do everything - Harrison," he shrugged and you reminded yourself to give that motherfucker a big old kiss before he left.
He laid on the blanket, leaning up on his elbows and patted the space next to him.
"Come on," he said, "it will be like when you had no furniture," he grinned and tossed an almond in his mouth.
That seemed like a lifetime ago. Another life. Just another Y/N to add to the collection. Law student Y/N, wife Y/N, cheater Y/N, failure Y/N. And now, what?
Tom's Y/N. For how much longer?
18 hours, 17, 16...
