Chapter 27: Getting on a hit-list

The next morning, An Lian was feeling particularly good.

He practically jumped out of bed and skipped to class. Ru Lan who shared her first class with An Lian was very happy with this outcome.

Of course, Ru Lan had also been in the crowd of players throwing flowers yesterday, so she had a pretty good idea as to why An Lian was so cheerful today.

Ru Lan: "An Lian ah, did something good happen?"

An Lian replied, "I took your advice Ru Lan, I'll definitely not let things get to me anymore and face my fears."

Ru Lan smiled, she was very glad things were coming together – but it wasn't enough just yet. Ru Lan knew that the progress online was good, but she was unsure about how things were in real life.

Jian Chen was also making his way over to the lecture room, and Ru Lan seized the opportunity.

"An Lian, after class today, let's go to a café together?"

"A café? Why ah... exams are starting soon, do we really have time to fool around?"

"Come on, please? It will be fun, it's good to take a break."

"...I guess."

"Great! Let's meet at MoonLight café around two o'clock?"

An Lian just sighed and agreed, Ru Lan had helped him out, so it's only fair he accompanies her too.

Now, Ru Lan could put her experiment to the test.

If Jian Chen follows them to the café after overhearing their conversation, it would be a good sign. If he doesn't, he's either still denying his feelings or he doesn't care... but that won't happen, Ru Lan thought.

But there was still more to do before the time of the 'café date', they still had one class together – which meant, more opportunities of course!

And to make things greater, Meng Ying was also in this class!

Ru Lan could assess An Lian's reaction to her! Everything was set up perfectly, so Ru Lan put on her investigating glasses and took out a notebook.

Let's begin

The second Meng Ying came into the picture Ru Lan noted the mood shifted dramatically. Jian Chen's slight frown turned into something far more sinister. And even An Lian looked up and sighed slightly.

Meng Ying: "Gege, guess what!"

Jian Chen turned his head away and stared out the window. An Lian noticed this and giggled.

Jian Chen heard someone quietly mocking his situation and turned to glare at them – before finding out it was An Lian and his scowl softened. Jian Chen thought to himself, you dare make fun of your husband... You just wait An Lian.

An Lian, who was caught, lowered his gaze - still grinning widely.

Ru Lan was watching intently, Interesting interaction... they seem to have gotten closer lately.

Meng Ying did not falter and continued her assault on Jian Chen. So, Ru Lan decided to start phase two of her operation.

She shifted herself closer to An Lian and leaned her upper body over his desk toward him resting her chin in her palm. She started some small talk hoping to gain the attention of Jian Chen – and the result was unexpectedly good!

Ru Lan saw it was almost instant. The second she leaned over, Jian Chen was already watching her like a hawk. Ru Lan: This is great! I can almost feel the heat from his stare on me. Should I be afraid? No... he wouldn't hurt An Lian's friend... right?

Everything was going extremely well and An Lian was completely oblivious.

Ru Lan sat back down in her seat and continued watching.

It was clear now, Jian Chen was pissed. Even Meng Ying could sense it. Jian Chen, who was watching An Lian attentively since walking to this class, was fuming, You still flirt with girls even though you have a husband!?

How would you feel if I flirted with other girls!?

Jian Chen turned to Meng Ying and initiated a conversation.

An Lian saw this too and was surprised for a moment, but then thought about it.

An Lian: Despite Meng Ying bothering him he still talks to her. Jian Chen is really kind after all... he helped me out a lot. I guess he's like that with everyone... I shouldn't think I'm special.

An Lian could only speculate watching the two talk cheerfully.

Ru Lan: What is this situation!? This was not planned ah!

Ru Lan noticed An Lian staring at Jian Chen in a strange way, and she couldn't put her finger on it... slightly frowning but also smiling – what does it mean! Almost like he's trying to mask his true feelings with a smile...

Jian Chen looked over to check on An Lian's reaction and felt at loss for words.

An Lian was looking down at his desk his hands in his lap looking slightly depressed.

Jian Chen: Did I go too far?

Jian Chen also did not say anything for the rest of the class.

Ru Lan was overwhelmed with the information load she had just received and needed a moment to process.

But she did not have a moment as it was time to initiate the final stage! The café, the true test of Jian Chen's attraction to An Lian. Although at this point she had no doubts in her heart anymore... Actually, she was a bit fearful for her own life at the moment.

This was dangerous ground.

And to further surprise her, Jian Chen showed up with Meng Ying!

The two couples were almost alone in the whole café and the atmosphere was tense.

Ru Lan speculated, Jian Chen brought Meng Ying as a cover-up for his true intentions – to spy on An Lian of course!

The date was only brief as An Lian did not feel comfortable staying for long – Ru Lan couldn't blame him, she felt she had just gotten on some hit-list.

Ru Lan noticed An Lian was also looking a bit down, and felt a little bad, Was it my fault? I'm I going to fast?

So, Ru Lan concerned for her friend asked, "An Lian, are you sad again?"

An Lain shook his head and smiled, "There's nothing to be sad about ah, I'm just thinking too much."

Ru Lan didn't know how to interpret that so she left it there.

It seems she can conclude from her elaborate study, things are much further along than she first thought. But, the subjects have not overtly expressed their feeling to each other yet. From her assessment she can gather that Jian Chen is very aware while An Lian still does not quite understand. This will make for an interesting conclusion.
