Side characters would be like the best friends/mentors/kin of the MC, and they need some personality.
You may be thinking, "I can just make their personality change throughout the story to fit the plot" but that won't really work. Of course, as cats grow up they change in personality. But they still need to have some of the same morals.
If you need a cat to make some choices your current ones wouldn't make, find a random cat from your Clan in their general age group and have them slowly form into the group! As cats grow up they make new friends, remember.
