While these characters aren't too important, they need to stay consistent. Keep their personalities mostly the same. Small changes are okay since they are constantly learning new things in their life, no matter how old, but you can't make them almost an entirely different cat in between two chapters.
Just keep them consistent, and still try to give them good names, and don't just say "brown tom with brown eyes" for a description. You could perhaps try "dark brown tom with dark brown eyes" or "light brown tom with pale brown eyes". It adds some more detail, even to a character who might be described once or twice.
