The clock is ticking as I tapped the top of my pencil against the wooden surface. I looked around the crowded classroom out of pure boredom. I was in Spanish class and the teacher was going on about something in Spanish that I had no idea about. This was my least favorite class, aside from PE. I tried really hard to concentrate on the unfamiliar words but had no luck. I was failing this class and I knew it.
My eyes landed on the fluffy haired boy that was in the same row as me. He was paying attention to the teacher, comprehending her foreign words. I sighed dreamily, placing my chin in the palm of hands. This was the only class I had with him and I spent my time admiring him. This was probably one of the reasons why I was failing this class.
Suddenly, he turned around and looked at me. My eyes widened as he continued to stare at me. I felt my cheeks start to heat up with embarrassment so I looked down at my desk.
"Miss Brooklyn!!" Mrs. Gomez yelled at me.
Startled, I jumped in my seat and looked up at her. The class quietly snickered, including the person I was previously distracted by. I blushed, "Y-yes?"
She let out a disappointed sigh before she began speaking in Spanish to me. I stared at her in confusion, have absolutely no idea what she had just said. "Um..S-si?" I replied, my reply sounding more like a question rather then an answer.
She shook her head before walking back to the front of the class. I sunk back in my seat, embarrassed. Some people snickered and whispered to each other while others just rolled their eyes at me before returning their attention back to the teacher.
Time went by and the bell finally rang, indicating that it was lunch time. Students quickly gathered up their things before leaving the classroom as Mrs. Gomez notified us of an upcoming final next week. I was one of the last students out before she called me back.
Nervous, I approached her. "Yes, Mrs. Gomez?"
She pulled out the chair and sat at her desk, hands folded on top of the mahogony surface. "Brooklyn..." she sighed, "you're one of the smartest students in this class. I hear teachers talk about you all the time..but.."
"But what?" I asked, getting a feeling of what was going to come next.
"Brooklyn, you're failing this class." she stated, her worried eyes looking up at me. "You were doing really well the first year, but now.. you're not really paying attention in class anymore; you're always looking somewhere else."
I stayed silent as I bit my lip; something I always did whenever I was nervous. "I'm trying. I really am--"
"You have a D in this class." she interrupted. "Next month is the final and if you don't pass, I'm afraid I'm going to have to fail you and have you retake this class."
My eyes widened. "No! Please, I'll pass that final. I will. I'll pay attention more, I-I'll change my study habits! I'll do anything!" I pleaded, holding tight onto the strap of my backpack.
"Alright, alright..." she said. "I believe in you Brooklyn. You're dismissed now."
I nodded before hurrying out of that suffocating classroom. The lunchline was now full and long so I decided to not get lunch since by the time I actually get my lunch, the bell would've already rung. I sighed before walking to the place I usually ate lunch at with Madison. I approached the dark haired girl with red framed glasses before sitting next to her.
"There you are!" Madison exclaimed, smiling at me before taking a bite out of her sandwich. "Where were you? I saved you a spot in line but I couldn't find you anywhere."
"Sorry, Mrs. Gomez held me back." I muttered as I watched her eat.
"What? Why?" she mumbled through a mouthful of lettuce, tomato, and the rest of the ingredients of the sandwich.
"I'm failing her class..." I mumbled as quietly as possible.
"What?" Madison asked, not hearing me.
"I said, I'm failing her class!" I repeated, louder than before.
"You're kidding right?" she said.
I gave her a look, "Does it look like I'm kidding?"
She quickly backed off. "But her class is so easy."
"Yeah, but I've been getting distracted and it's just..ugh," I groaned, burying my face in my hands.
She smirked at me. "Distracted, huh?"
I nodded as she smiled. "Were you staring at that Carlos kid again?"
My eyes widened as I lifted my head quickly, my glasses nearly falling. "Maddy! His name is Calum for your information!" I scolded, "And...maybe."
She laughed aloud, causing me to playfully hit her arm. "Stop--Wait, how'd you know?"
"A couple of kids from your Spanish class was talking about how you couldn't take your eyes off him while I was waiting in the lunchline," she chuckled, before drinking out of her juice box.
"How embarrassing!" I groaned to myself. "He probably thinks I'm a creep now."
"I don't understand why you like him, this morning I heard that he slept with Kandy!" she exclaimed.
"Maddy, you know those are rumors.." I stated, shaking my head.
"I know, but it could be true," she shrugged.
"If you're trying to make me not like him, it's not working," I smirked.
Madison just laughed once more before continuing her lunch. After she was done, we decided to walk around the school as we talked about random subjects that came into our conversation. With time still left over, we decided to walk towards the grass field where all the athletic people usually were.
Madison was talking about something funny that happened with a kid in science class but I was too distracted by the sweaty soccer players running around the field to even listen. I watched as they chased after the black and white ball, passing it to one another. Madison was still going on about whatver she was talking about to even notice that I wasn't paying attention anymore.
Suddenly, I found that fluffy haired boy that was in Spanish class with me running around with the soccer ball in his possession. The school's logo was on the front and back of his shirt, along with the number 13. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead as he ran, trying to maintain the ball in his possession.
"Calum!" one of the soccer players called out, catching Calum's attention.
Calum nodded to him before kicking the ball across the field, the ball flying across. The soccer player jumped up, trying to bounce the soccer ball off his head but missed. The ball continued to fly through the air and it was coming towards me.
"Watch out!" someone shouted.
I stopped walking and stood there, eyes wide open as the ball headed towards me.
"Wait, why'd you stop--" Madison stopped mid-sentence as she looked up.
With quick reflexes, I quickly dodged the ball as I turned my head to the side. I let out a sigh of relief, relieved that I didn't get hit. Suddenly, I heard a loud thud beside me. I turned around to find Madison lying on the ground, eyes closed while her glasses laid on the ground beside her, cracked.
"Maddy?"
No response.
Then I heard some footsteps coming from behind me. Turning around, I found no one other than Calum Hood.
