In the past ten minutes, I have experienced three awkward moments that will probably screw my life up.
First off, i found the father of my children.
Second, I met his wife.
Third, Mitch showed up at the greatest and maybe worst possible time.
What a day so far.
“This is Mitch, my friend,” I introduced Mitch to Jordan and Barbie doll, in which Mitch had paled, but gave a sheepish wave to both of them, one arm still around my waist. I saw Jordan’s face harden, and Barbie doll just looked down at Jordan’s niece, who Evangeline was calling Faye when they were playing.
“Hey, Jordan. How’s it going?” Mitch gave Jordan a breezy smile, which he returned. Wait. Did they know each other or what?
“Isabella… we need to talk in private.” Jordan murmured to Barbie doll, who raised her eyebrows at Mitch and nodded, and Jordan grabbed her hand and led her away from us. I turned towards Finn, who was running towards us happily, in a better mood now that Mitch was here.
I didn’t know what Mitch and I were. He was there for me when I had the kids at a toddler state. He was Jake’s co-worker, and Jake had introduced us. “There’s not a better guy for you than Mitch,” He had said, and so, I had went on a few dates with him, and I genuinely liked him.
He was a prominent part of the kids lives, but he wasn’t pressuring me to date him, which was actually kind of nice for a change. I had always been pressured, and with Mitch I could let loose and be happy, and the kids adored him. We were in a slow, comfortable pace, but I didn’t know what we were. I would kiss him goodnight, but we were not dating. I had been over to his apartment countless times, but we were not dating. I wasn’t ready for that commitment, and he understood that. He was just there for my kids when they needed a father figure.
I did love him, but I wasn’t sure how I did yet. He was certainly my best friend, so there was that. I could come to him with anything, and he was a genuinely good guy. We were just… complicated at best.
Jordan and Barbie doll went to talk in private, and Mitch sat on the bench, and I gave him a sheepish smile. “So… hows your day going? I found the twins father. Did you fix your tripod?”
Mitch scoffed, laughing a little bit. “You really are something else. Yeah, it was pretty obvious when you look at Finn and Jordan. They’re twins.” I took a look at Finn, who was coming over to us with a wide grin on his face.
“Mitch!” He yelled happily, running towards him, his arms outspread.
For a six year old, Finn was an introverted six year old. He spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos, the same ones that Mitch still did. Mitch was going to school right now, but for now, YouTube was still his permanent job, and he loved it.
“You know Jordan?” I raised my eyebrows at Mitch, watching Finn happily give him a hug and sit beside him, pulling his phone out of his front pocket and begin to do something on it, while Evangeline and Jordan’s niece, who had slipped away from Barbie doll, began to play together on the swingset. Mitch took a glance at Jordan and Barbie doll, who were fighting, it looked like.
