A Sinner's Secret

Chapter 14 ~ Shy No More

Copeland's POV

"Just don't punch any teachers, please. I don't need you in juvy." Dad laughed uneasily from the other side of the bulletproof glass. He held his palm up to the glass where mine was placed over it.

I needed reassurance today, the first day of school. Senior year, the year I'll be graduating from misery. I just feel bad for Kade, she's still got one more year of hell. When I heard Dad was thrown in jail, I may have flipped shit, but I can't blame him. She was my aunt, too. But, she was also Kade's mom. I don't know how I should feel about her. Should I blame her for pretty much sending my dad to jail, or sympathize her for her loss?

And my definition of flipping shit is more than just trashing my own house. I dyed my hair and may have possibly gotten every general piercing known. "But, red, really? You couldn't have gone something subtle like black? Come on, my hair's awesome!" He said, flipping his hair, dramatically.

I laughed, shrugging. "It's my favorite color! How could I not dye my hair the brightest shade of red in existence?"

I feathered out my hair, so it's lighter than it had been before. Snakebites, nose, and eyebrow piercings decorated my face. It was a whole new look for me, but there's no turning back now.

"Time to go back, Quinn." I dreaded every moment Dad gets whisked away by cruel guards. They're so careless, never showing the slightest bit of kindness towards anyone.

The guard wrapped a firm hand around his arm, placing them behind his back to handcuff them. "Good luck, Cope. Have a great first day, honey."

I stood up, scraping the chair's legs against the dusty floor. "Wait, Dad!" I yelled into the phone even though he couldn't hear. I groaned in defeat and hung the phone back in place. They always take him away before I have a chance to tell him I love him.

"Move along, honey. We've got people waiting." An older lady scowled at me while gesturing to a young man, the both of them crossing their arms.

I mentally rolled my eyes at the both of them. I watched as she sat the man down while I walked away, flipping them off the whole walk out the door.

The jail was decently close to school since in this town, a police station is required to be close to all schools. And all police stations need to be close to the jail, so we have quite a few around here, at least one every four blocks.

The bus drove by, sending a wave of shouts and music from inside where all the students fooled off. I hated the bus, so I never rode it ever again since my kindergarten field trip. I shivered at the thought of little Xavier Stewart up chucking the seven cupcakes all over my brand new Hello Kitty dress. I was washing frosting out of my hair for days. I'm pretty sure I still have sprinkles deep in my scalp.

Before I knew it, I had reached the school. As usual, the incoming freshman thought Halloween came early and decided to go as skanks this year. Or was it clowns? Skanky clowns? I can't tell with all that cake they call make up baked on their faces and the strings they call clothes.

Our school was like oil in water. You had your sluts in front of the school, your jocks next to them, the nerds out in the science lab, the musicians in the band room, and the trouble makers out in the parking lot. You had all these groups of people, yet they never mixed. The cheerleaders and sluts never left each others' sides. The jocks huddled together in their bromances. The nerds built their robots and experimented with chemistry. The musicians always practiced or serenaded girls out in the field. And your troublemakers spray painted cars and pulled pranks on teachers.
