Chapter 23 ~ This Is Not An Illusion

Kade's POV

His eyes that shone in the illuminating beam of moonlight and resembled the finest of emeralds.

His dimple that was hidden beneath the stubble along his chin and ended at the keenness of his jawline on the right side of his face.

His wide grin that spread from ear to ear, present because of my existence.

It was all real. He was all real. My father was the man that stood before me making a desperate conversation to squeeze every detail about myself from the preservation of my mind.

"I have to remember that your favorite color is purple and you have a severe obsession with The Beatles. C'mon tell me more!" He was so giddy, like a kid in a candy shoppe.

An easy laugh reverberated from the back of my throat. "I don't know what else I can tell you...Dad. I've told you all there is to know about Kade Quinn."

He clasped his hands behind his back, bouncing on the balls of his feet. A warm glow was evident on his cheeks. "You took your mom's maiden name."

"Well, I have a lot of last names to choose from, Bradford, Tomlinson, Quinn. But I think I've found one I know I'll stick with. Kade Nike." I shook my head, liking the way my name flowed. It just felt right, like it was meant to be. "I don't know if I'll get used to that."

Drew's grin only grew, his eyes darting to floor, bashfully. "My daughter..." If it weren't for my werewolf hearing I would've missed that small title that could make my heart skip a beat.

I looked over at my mom with a smile, hoping she's see how happy meeting my dad could make me. Her head lay on Harry's shoulder, her eyes closed and a lazy smile across her lips. Harry's long fingers were tangled in the ends of her hair like a cat playing with a ball of yarn, the other hand sprawled in the grass to support his weight as he leaned back to admire the stars. My mother and Harry seemed to have an aura whenever they were together.

True love.

"What's eating at your insides, Sweet Pea?" I scrunched my nose up at the nickname. It was sweet, yet I felt awkward that Drew, looking as young as he would be in human years, would say cute things to me. The age difference almost made me feel as if we were dating.

I stayed silent, debating on whether or not I should be completely open to him, even if he is my dad. He followed my gaze until he found what I was distressed about. His lips fell into a stiff pout. You could practically hear his heart shatter to bits.

"Kade, can we have a serious talk?" Drew asked, clearing his throat and placing his rough hand on the small of my back. It suddenly brought back memories of Marcel and how he would always touch me. Once he told me he couldn't help from doing something such as holding hands. He liked to think that by doing so, I was safe.

He guided me towards a more quiet and secluded spot of grass. He was the first to sit down, laying on his back with one hand placed on his abdomen where his tan shirt had risen up just enough to see part of his defined v-line. With the other hand that caressed each blade of grass, he patted the spot beside him.

I lay beside him, a few inches of space between our bodies. I fixed my hair so that it was sprawled around my face. My eyes roamed over the dark canvas, my mind trying to count all the stars there possibly could be out tonight. The sky was a masterpiece with swirls of dark blues and light purples, splattered with the tiniest of white specks.
