I listened in secret happiness as each of my former friends filled the silent void with stories of who they were now. Yoongi went back to college after dropping out a year after we all left. He was studying music and he said he wanted to work at a label one day as a producer. I could see him doing it too. He'd always been into music.

Hoseok worked with younger teens at a dance studio in the north part of Gwangju. He was saving up to buy his own studio, though he wasn't sure where he wanted to go yet. I smiled thinking about it. Hoseok hadn't changed much in the regard of his dreams either. Namjoon worked at an elementary school, just like Mark's boyfriend, only he worked as a fifth grade English teacher. Namjoon was the only one who'd ever been fluent in English in the group, no matter how much he had tried to teach us.

Taehyung told us that Jimin was still in college. He was studying to become a veterinarian, but he worked a few odd jobs here and there to pay for tuition, dorms, and textbooks. From what Taehyung could remember of his most recent jobs, he worked as a server for an upscale restaurant near the Busan College, a worker at a pet shop, and as a freelance tutor for his colleagues. I was happy that the pink haired boy was doing all of that on his own, but it didn't surprise me. As troubled Jimin was – or at least had been – and all the times I had to talk him down from hurting himself aside, he was a hard worker.

Taehyung was in college himself, though he already had a start on his career. He was working as part of a design team at some designer clothing brand branch in Korea. I wondered if it was Gucci. He'd always talked about buying the company one day, though we were all so broke that that thought was always said as a joke. Jungkook was working part time as a tattoo artist and full time as a personal trainer, not entirely sure if he wanted to go to college at all. Jungkook was still a free spirit it seemed.

I was surprised at how much the group hadn't changed, in a way. Still, looking at all of them alone showed how much different they'd become, both form their old selves and each other. I wondered what we would all be like as friends now.

We were older, more mature and fine-tuned in the ways of the world, even Jungkook still being as young as he is. I wondered if they each had the same opinions that we grow close on, and eventually tore us apart. I wondered what if would be like if we were all a family again. The chance of that seemed so far away.

I excused myself to do my rounds. I apologized the other one duty nurse, but she waved me off.

"I was walking through when your old friends showed up, take the time you need I got this," she had smiled at me.

I thanked her and began making my way back to the others. It felt natural, coming back to them, even after four years. The only difference this time way the way I didn't feel like the parent of the group anymore. I was the oldest still, yes, but they were all so much older and grown up. It felt off that way, but it was nice not having to govern every conversation to make sure arguments didn't start.

Not that my efforts ever mattered.

I try to exhale you in pain like smoke, like white smoke.
